I think it's a smokescreen set up by Morey.

I have no doubt that Morey is eyeing Melo, but I think he has his eyes set on Chris Paul and taking on Emeka Okafor.

I think he is just trying to turn everyone's focus away from the Hornet's situation. I wouldn't be shocked if CP3 is wearing a different uniform after the deadline. Let's just hope it's in Rockets red.

To be fair, we don't have a lot to lose. Without a true go-to guy like Carmelo, this team will be stuck in the 6-8 in range in the West for many years. I think Morey wants to roll the dice and go for broke. Ballsy move.

IMO, if we trade for Melo w/o an extension, it has to be for the sole reason that Morey believes our team will be so good that we will either win the championship, or make it to the Finals. Anything short of that, and Melo most likely leaves for NY anyways.

Right now, even with Melo, we're not as good as the Lakers / Heat / Celtics. We will need a big guy to truly compete. If we trade for Melo, and go in 'all in' mode this year, Morey will have to do a 2nd move to get a big guy. Whether that's Nene, Varejao, etc, we'll need Melo + a big to have any shot of making a deep run and convincing Melo hey, the Rockets are for real, we just had injury problems in the past, and we're moving past that.

Even then, if we bust out of the playoffs, Melo may leave, and we'll be totally stripped of assets that were so smoothly aquired over the years by Morey. As it is, its a sticky situation if Melo comes without an extension. We need that extension.

This. Remember what happened last trade deadline with T-Mac's Expiring Contract? All the rumors were New York for their picks + Hill + other junk, Philly for Iguodala + Dalembert or Brand, and Golden State for Anthony Randolph + junk. At least those were the Clutchfans rumors. Kevin Martin was "unavailable" the entire year

I don't think its the Nuggets who is stalling the deal, rather, it's Anthony who doesn't want to play and sign long term for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets/???. Think about it... it's the freaking Nets. Hence the rental talk.

I think Hill would be the key for us to strike a deal for melo, since they want a young big with upside although he's the only player I would want untouchable because of length and ability to play both ends.

If Morey can land Melo though I think it would be worth the risk, if he can sell him on pairing him with howard and cp3, they can force a trade here next year when they have the ability to walk in free agency :)

There might be sure things out there that will work for the team mortgaging the future.A defensive center keep some assets for future use or may be try to pick up some 1st round picks.

I doubt we trade Melo with the "hope" of retaining him in the off-season. I feel if we get Melo, it means we are getting another star, too.

Trade Yao for Melo, straight up. Denver get the money off the books and we get a rented player, all even after the year is up.

Didn't those dumbasses in Denver just sign Al Harrington to that 5yr/$35M contract a few months ago? They should have known better.

Yep. Carmelo could be the next Carlos Beltran.

If we trade for Carmelo ... I don't know, I feel like we're settling for a second-rate "superstar". The chances we acquire a first-rate superstar is slim to none, I guess, but still I'm not convinced Carmelo is worth it.

Well, if we get Melo and then a first-rate superstar becomes available, maybe we can trade our second-rate superstar for him. :) (Probably a tad early for me to start the "Trade Melo for Chris Paul" thread right now).

    Paul
    Martin
    Melo
    Scola

    This trumps Arroyo/Wade/Lebron/Bosh.

True. But we'd have to convince Carmelo to resign with us first. That will take a lot of persuasion on our part, and then if we turn around and trade him that could make us look pretty bad.

well if all we give up is yao and one other player, i don't see why not...

but i'm leery about a one year rental. randy johnson comes to mind...

if morey could land melo AND say... chris paul? GO FOR IT

Budinger, Hill, Yao's expiring and 1st round pick for Melo and Harrington.

Best Case: Melo re-signs and Harrington is a solid scorer off the bench.

Worst Case: Harrington becomes the "star player" Morey was willing to trade the assets for, lol

Man this is such a big gamble on Daryl's part. With CP3 wanting to leave to go to NYC, it is almost guaranteed that Melo wound not resign with us. The fact of having A-Stat, CP3 and Melo in one team is way to tempting. If we do acquire him, it will be a one year title shot and then tanking/draft rebuilding mode(due to the pieces we would be trading to get Melo on our team).

Nah, too much of a risk for me. I wouldn't want the team to turn into the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Cleveland Cavs it would be devastating.
