The statist cures are coming! Hooray!

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-soda sentiment seems to be spreading: Boston is also now considering a ban on the sale of super-sized soft drinks at restaurants in an attempt to prevent obesity.

Cambridge, Mass., Mayor Henrietta Davis, who brought the idea to a city council meeting Monday, provided few details, but said such rules would be similar to the ban being debated in New York City, where regulations outlawing sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces could go into effect as early as March 2013.

Like their New York counterparts, owners of some Boston-area restaurants are concerned.

“People love soda around here,” said the owner of one downtown Boston deli who asked not to be named, fearing negative attention from local officials. “Soda –- especially the bigger bottles –- carry high margins, so my business would definitely take a hit.”

“We have plans to expand to a second location,” he added. “A soda ban wouldn’t kill those plans, but it would certainly affect them.”

The New York City Board of Health is in the process of approving Bloomberg’s soda ban, with a final vote scheduled for Sept. 13. At a recent hearing, board members said that other items should be included in the ban, such as large tubs of popcorn and milkshakes.

That’s just what scares Adam DiCenso the most. The owner of Pinnochio’s Pizza in Cambridge, DiCenso said he just heard the news that Boston was considering the ban.

“I can live without the big sodas, but we also sell big slices of pizza,” DiCenso said. “I just hope they don’t try to take those away too.”

The soda ban is nothing more than about money.

You buy 1 super-sized soda. More than likely you won't buy another 1.

You buy 3 smaller sized sodas, the quanity is less and you are paying more for the less amount than 1 super-sized soda.

"Prevent Obesity, by making our wallets fatter" should be the slogan for this.

This is stupid. You can prevent super-sized drinks but if they're fountain drinks, it doesn't matter what size you get. You can just go back and get more. Makes the whole ban useless.

You realize you can buy a fountain drink and just keep refilling and refilling to your heart's content? If they truly wanted to make a difference they'd ban refills at which point I'd be pissed off.

This is a great ban. Most people don't realize its the soda that's making them fat asses. Most people think it's the food they eat when really it's the garbage they drink.

Its not soda itself, its the artificial sweeteners and the high fructose corn they use.

Studies have shown that high fructose corn syrup multiplies the amount of weight you gain by as many as six times what natural sugar will do to you. The only reason why soda companies use high fructose corn syrup? Because its cheaper than natural sugar.

Capitalism: Forgoing safety and health in lieu of maximizing profits.

Why can't they decide that for themselves?

Its a mixed bag. I'm not a fan of forcing people to be healthy either... but when there parents out there who don't give a damn about healthy choices and just let their kids get obese (effectively ruining their social lives) where do we draw the line?

Do we just let it happen? The kids don't know any better but if the parents just don't give a damn why not eliminate the ridiculous choices off the menu? I don't know. I'm conflicted here. Society conflicts with morality.

Mass. mayor suggests ban on large drinks, free refills

    June 20th, 2012

A Massachusetts mayor is taking inspiration from a controversial New York City proposal to ban large, sugary beverages – and might even want to take it a step further.

Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis (D) unveiled a proposal that would outlaw large-size sodas and other sugary drinks in area restaurants to the City Council on Monday.

She’s also suggesting that city officials consider banning free refills of sugary beverages, which would be a step beyond New York City’s plan.

It's not even that it is necessarily cheaper, it is just so heavily subsidized by the US governement to the point that it forces the companies to make that choice rather than go with cane sugar which is traditionally imported and has tarriffs associated with it.

Government creates the problem and then gets to come up with some r****d solution. BS.

As we get fatter and as a result get sicker, insurance premiums go up which forces the need for more healthcare, and meanwhile, all the corporate shareholders who own stock in coke & pharmaceuticals are just laughing their asses off all the way to the bank as the US debt grows through these wealth transfer mechanisms called subsidies.

They are deciding that for themselves -- by electing a representative government that passes laws to regulate the size of the drinks for sale. Don't you like democracy?

This is not free market capitalism, it's your beloved government at work:

In the U.S., HFCS is among the sweeteners that have primarily replaced sucrose (table sugar) in the food industry. Factors for this include governmental production quotas of domestic sugar, billions of dollars subsidies of U.S. corn, and an import tariff on foreign sugar; all of which combine to raise the price of sucrose to levels above those of the rest of the world, making HFCS less costly for many sweetener applications.

We need to accept darwinism. If people want to load their bodies with 1k calories of sugar drank, let them. Just don't let my taxes go to paying their medical bills when they need their feet amputated.

The other day I saw a mother refusing to buy her kid a large soda and opting for a medium instead. How does she not see that she's slowly being brainwashed? What a collectivist idiot!

It's all that communifascist Obama's fault! I want to live in a place where we all collectively disagree with whatever the federal government does/recommends. We can't be allowed to independently agree! Independent agreement with the federal government is the surest sign we're all headed toward the Soviet-style gulags.

This is another perfect example of local governments making a decision for their people -- if the local population doesn't like the change they can vote them out.
