I would have to see the skit in context but this sounds like much ado about nothing. The skit was basically about funny / crazy things that kids say and that's what they did. It wasn't like Jimmy Kimmel was saying that people in China should be killed.
I voted for all of them because I can. And because the idea of firing him over that is stupid. And because the only option you made for no, is worded to make anyone who votes that way seem a bit racist to Chinese people.
It could have been a funny bit in another setting, but for a mainstream TV audience they should know what will stir up an unnecessary controversy. He should issue an apology to anyone who might have been offended, and move on. No other action should be necessary.
Representative Mike Honda (CA-17), Chair Emeritus: “The ABC network recently allowed comedian Jimmy Kimmel to air a skit in which a group of children suggested that "we kill everyone in China" to avoid paying back the national debt. Some things are funny, but racial hatred is not one of them . These statements, left unchecked, promote intolerance, and I am concerned that the producers of Mr. Kimmel's program allowed this to air. Children may not know better, but producers and ABC's management should. “An apology must be issued, and I sincerely hope the network uses better judgment in the future. As a Japanese-American who was put in an internment camp during World War II, I have firsthand experience of this country's discriminatory intolerance, prejudice, and hysteria. Having worked hard in Congress to promote diversity and acceptance, I believe Mr. Kimmel's program is an affront not only to the Chinese, but to all who promote human dignity .”
http://capac-chu.house.gov/press-release/capac-chair-and-chair- Representative Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair: “I understand the jovial nature of a comedy show, but jokes about killing over 1 billion Chinese people are no laughing matter. This type of xenophobic rhetoric can cause dangerous ramifications for the Asian American community. Although the show ’s producers could not have predicted how the children would respond, Jimmy Kimmel and the ABC Network should not have allowed the segment to air. Comments referring to genocide should not be repeated, laughed at, or tolerated. I am disappointed Mr. Kimmel and ABC chose to air a segment that clearly crossed a line and the Asian American community deserves an apology. ”
Then you shall exercise option 4, sir. If they put out a similar joke on the Jews or the African Americans, JK would have been out of his job on the very day.
*sigh* This had nothing to do with race. The only reason Chinese was even mentioned was because they are in fact the country we owe a lot of money to. If he had asked the kids the same question but said Canada instead, then I'm sure the kid would of offered the same response.
It's not Kimmel; it's his production staff that didn't bother to edit that segment out. If that kid had said kill all Jews or kill all blacks, there's not a doubt in my mind that would have never gone on air. If I were Kimmel, I would fire them.
"The Jews" and "The African-Americans" aren't nationalities but comedians make jokes about "The Jews" and "The African-Americans" all the damn time. Get a life.
It's not like other minorities can't be made a joke about. It's the "killing" thing that gets into people's nerves. How about people jokingly saying the Jews bankrupted the whole country so that they should be killed? What responses would we get from the Jewish community?
Exactly, in this country it's not racist if its against Asian people and/or Not against African American people.
