A seven-year-old girl was ritually murdered and her liver offered to the gods in return for a good agricultural harvest in the central state of Chhattisgarh, India, police said on Sunday.
According to Narayan Das, police chief of Bijapur district, in a telephone conversation with AFP: "A seven-year-old girl was sacrificed by two persons superstitiously believing that the act would give a better harvest."
Police arrested two men in connection with the murder of Lalita Tati after her body was found in October. Her family had reported her missing. According to the police, the men confessed to the crime.
AFP reports that the jungle district of Chhattisgarh is a rebel Maoist stronghold where human sacrifice is still practised. The sacrifices are believed to appease the gods, spirits and deities.
The district of Chhattisgarh is not the only one in India where human sacrifice is practised. In 2010, the decapitated body of a factory worker was found in a temple in the eastern state of West Bengal.
The practice of child sacrifice persists in many parts of India in spite of efforts by government to stop it. In 2006, The Guardian reported a case of sacrifice of a child in the village of Barha in the province of Khurja, Uttar Pradesh. Sumitra Bushan, 43, became convinced that she was cursed with nightmares by the goddess Kali. She would often wake up in the middle of the night screaming. On the advice of a tantrik or traveling "holy man," she sacrificed a chicken and offered the blood to appease the goddess. But the nightmares continued. She consulted the tantrick once again and he told her: "For the sake of your family, you must sacrifice another, a boy from your village." Sumitra and her two sons abducted three-year-old Aakash Singh in the neighborhood . According to The Guardian:
"They dragged him into their home and the eldest son performed a puja ceremony, reciting a mantra and waving incense. Sumitra smeared sandalwood paste and globules of ghee over the terrified child's body. The two men then used a knife to slice off the child's nose, ears and hands before laying him, bleeding, in front of Kali's image."
Superstition that human sacrifices are the most potent for warding off certain categories of danger persists in remote rural parts of India where the people are illiterate and superstitious. Sanal Edamaruku, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, said: "Modern India is home to hundreds of millions who can't read or write, but who often seek refuge from life's realities through astrology or the magical arts of shamans. Unfortunately these people focus their horrific attention on society's weaker members, mainly women and children who are easier to handle and kidnap."

Anyone that is stupid enough to believe in human sacrifice should be killed just for being that ****ing stupid.
Religious freedom is great, but at some point a line should be drawn.

    sigh...

Who said this had anything to do with religion. No one cited any religious doctrine. There's no Hindu, Muslim, or Christian scripture that calls for human sacrifice.

This is a product of uneducated people doing things based on tribal superstitions.

But ok, use it as an excuse to demand we restrict religious freedom. And do so without taking a second to verify if religion had anything to do with this.

Sounds like a tribal religion to me.

I can cite 2,000+ years of violence directly or indirectly related to religion (Chrisitianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc.) if I wanted to.

Religious freedom > Human life, apparently?
I'm all for religious freedom by the way. But are you really going to defend tribal religions that sacrifice human lives like these? Uneducated or not, killing people is wrong.

That makes no sense. Let me reiterate. You're using this as a nice excuse to rant about religion. First of all, tie this to religion. Figure out what religion these people were and then tell me what religious doctrine encouraged them to sacrifice children.

Chhattisgarh in particular is filled with tribal and historically lower caste groups that are very uneducated and as a result have continued to maintain old and an cases like this barbaric traditions. This is a consequence of being poor and uneducated, not because of a religion in particular. Close to half the state is classified as an officially recognized scheduled tribe or caste group.

I'm guessing you know next to nothing about India's history or the history of scheduled tribes and castes yet feel the need to use this tragedy as some sort of rant as to why religious freedom should be curtailed. And you do so in sweeping glances with little to no context.

You chose to interpret something as significant as religiously motivated violence based on one sentence of one article.

On another note about India, there have been 40+ million girls gone missing in the country since 1980. It's insane how they value their kids as future income, they see a girl as a burden. This happens in quite a few other places so I don't want to single out India, but this topic just reminded me of these staggering numbers and it hardly gets any attention.

Happened a lot in China too when they were extremely strict about the one child policy.

These people are called cult or serial killers in the United States, individuals who murder without one of the classic motives of love, money or anger. The hitch is that Abrahamic religions were the first ones to implicitly frown on human sacrifice as unneccessary for divine blessing, so Western countries don't have cultures that would allow this craziness to go unchecked. Also, non-industrialized, heavily populated countries simply can't be policed or governed with any real success.
