choosing the most preferable of available outcomes is a rational act

perhaps more conservative alternatives were available in the primary, but those are over

Voting against your economic self-interest is hardly rational, but GOP voters do it every single time they enter a voting booth.

Accepting your premise that they are voting against their economic self-interest, why would that be irrational?

What if they value other things more highly than their self-interest?

Rational actors act in their self-interest. It is sad you don't understand this.

Exactly!!!! My daughter is an amazing person. She knows Jesus and she knows the value of hard work and self reliance. She amazes me everyday on how much time in effort she puts into anything and everything she does. Heck it wears me out just trying to attend everything she does to support her. I have no doubt she will succeed in anything she puts her mind to. I fully expect her hard work will pay off (for me:) and her) in that I fully expect she will end up with a full ride academic scholarship. I will add that she has already been offered scholarships in both soccer and golf but she wants to wait for an academic scholarship. She is ranked#2 out of over 400 students in her senior class and has a real shot at being valedictorian. She definitely knows how to think for herself.;)

You are actually right. I have held my breath and voted for McCain and Romney in the last two election just because they were the lesser of two evils. I am not bound to the Republican party at all but I almost have to vote for whoever wins the Republican nomination.

Rational people do not want to see this country go to crap with leftist policies. That is why we hold our breath and vote for whoever wins the Republican primaries. It is simply a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils.

    You hold your breath?

That would explain the oxygen deprivation to your cerebral cortex and resulting damage.

You must not have seen the article I posted in the Hangout about the teenager who killed his mom and sexed her dead body losing his virginity.

"Leftist policies" aren't what are making this country "go to crap," especially once you realize that there haven't been any truly "leftist policies" passed since about 1964.

Leftist socialist even communist tenants are closer to the selfless communal teachings of Jesus Christ. The association of the self-interested, exclusive policies of the right is a false interpretation interpretation of The Word.

I hope the paradox makes your head assplode.

If it serves broader, more abstract goals and personal ideals: like allowing blacks and women compete with you for jobs and educational enrichment, for example; it is completely reasonable.

I disagree. It is true that there is a faction in the Democratic Party that is pinning itself against the far left end of the spectrum. Meanwhile, it is also true that the Tea Party is pinning itself against the far right end of the spectrum. Those two factions are mirror images of one another.

Not even the Republican Party of Reagan would have gotten behind the Tea Party. The Tea Party is the schizophrenic half brother of the Reagan Republicans.

If the GOP really wants to regain prominence, they will focus on conservative economic policies and stop focusing on gaining the force of law to run everybody's personal lives.

Democrats far left? Show me any Democrat publicly advocating any Socialist change in the US. Like Single Payer Health Insurace, publically owned energy generation so we can move away from CO2 poisoning, publicly supported cheap bulk heathy foods instead of processed fat and sugar, publicly owned defense industries that take the profit out of fear, publicly supported higher education that takes the profit out of student loans, real market regulation that removes catastrophic risks from big banking, real public works projects that provides jobs and nets a profit from infrastructure like high speed rail or high speed information.

We are so corporately brainwashed we don't even know what the left is anymore. The Left is people working cooperatively for the greater good.

The right is people acting only in their self interest, thinking short term, using any form of misinformation, exploiting any people, resources, or processes they can get the upper hand on like gerrymandering and voter suppression. It's anti- democratic, un-Christian and anti-social.

funny; that's how most libertarians (and there's a strong libertarian bent to much of the tea party) feel about democrats.
