Poor Man's Jose Calderon. Not necessarily a bad thing. I echo Clutch's assessment of him as probably our 3rd PG. Honestly, there are times I'd rather play him at the main backup PG than TD. We'll see if he can push for that spot as the season goes on.
Reminds me a lot of Goran and Kyle. Reckless as times, but that recklessness and ambition is the root of his good play. Kind of like Lin in NYK where they just let him do whatever the hell he wanted. I think that's why Lin is not doing as well as he should be right now. He's probably being told to pass the ball around. Lin is an on-ball player, unfortunately.
He can pass. Unfortunately, he is a huge liability everywhere else. I don't think he will even back up Toney Douglas. It's like the other guy said, he has what you can't teach, but he literally needs to work on every other part of his game. If he keeps on thinking "Dude, I can pass!" then he is going to be out of the league in six months. Prognosis: Backup PG on the Vipers while he develops the rest of his game if he is inclined to do so. If not, he will be flipping pizza in six months.
He is bad on defense because he has relatively short arms. It will be hard for him to be a defensive threat due to being limited physically.
More like this year's Ish Smith. Machado can dribble and pass, but that's about it. He looks really really short out there.
Could be a decent backup point guard, still needs work though. Has excellent court vision and passing (he seems to prefer a lot of flash, not necessarily a bad thing as it often seems to work). Nice confidence, but sometimes leads to turnovers. Cons are subpar shooting and finishing, and definitely defense, the opposition seems to have little trouble scoring on him, whether it's shooting over him or getting past him. Part of this might be due to his height, he looks like he's barely 6 feet without shoes, though his height helps him tunnel past guys and make crafty passes I guess.
In preseason garbage time at that.... Nice pick up but people need to calm down. Can be a potential 2nd string PG though TD is better at this point. Lacks athleticism, can't score, and makes Lin look a defensive stud with his poor defense.
If your running an offense you have to be an on ball player.... Unless you want Lin to play a Mario Chalmers or Derek Fisher role. Last time I checked we didn't have Lebron or Kobe on this team so doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
I like how this board overplays everything Machado does poorly and undersells his strengths.... Then they proceed to do the opposite for Lin.
He is a good passer and able to make the right plays but I don't know if his scoring ability would be disadvantage. Opponents would soon learn his game and just back off of him which forces him to shoot the ball and that's something he's not good at. But we'll see how he do later down the road.
I have been paying close attention to Machado defensive skilld since the traning camp. I noticed how easy it was for opposition PG's to drive by him. Not only that, he made little effort to 'catch up' on the play. He lacked of peripheral defensive vision and often ran straight into picks. He was like a lost puppy during defensive switches. Just a terrible defender. However, he has improved during preseason. I am sure our coaching staff had told him his weaknesses and he made some positive strides. I don't believe his defensive shortcomings can be corrected in a few games. I have no idea why his Iona college coaches didn't stress on his defense. NBA rule of the thumb for rookies: if you can't defend and hold your own, you are not NBA ready. Weak defenders WILL be exposed by other teams. His offense skills: He is a great dribbler and a good passer, both with confident. His decision making is still a work in progress. Even though he led the NCAA is APG, he wasn't drafted mainly because he played for Iona College, a non Divsion I team. I have noticed a number of his passes were deflected off defenders. Risky passes that worked at Iona College will become TOs in NBA. His biggest weakness is in when to shoot or pass. As an NBA PG, you dont pass an open corner 3. PERIOD! Beside shots in paint, Corner 3's are the most efficient shots in NBA. I absolutely hated when he labeled himself as 'pass first' or 'true' PG. This will phsychologically limit himself as a scorer. He is a far better shooter than Rondo in his rookie year. He has the athleticism to drive by his defenders. When a PG runs a team, he looks for ways to score by FIVE players, not FOUR! Overall, a year in the DL will do him a world of good. His talent is unique and is worth the time and patient.
Every year we go through this with a 3rd string PG. Ish, fortson, now machado. If you can't shoot, you have limited potential in the NBA unless you are Rondo. Rondo is the exception because he is elite in almost every other category imaginable including defense.
