Just read a synopsis of the plot of the short story that this is based on. It seems the core of the plot is based around some pretty abstract linguistics concepts. It appears way too philosophically arcane to make into a big time Hollywood film.
Let's see if Hollywood can actually make an intelligent alien invasion movie -- the trailer looks good -- shows the terror you would feel in that situation.
It's not an invasion story. Spoiler The aliens are aloof and inscrutable. Their motives appear inexplicable. They don't really seem to want anything at all. Right at the end of the story, they get up and leave forever for no a apparent reason. Spoiler The story is built around the idea that the syntax of language determines how you think - the structure of your language influences how you think, and the aliens think very differently from people. The written alien language requires basically to know how to write the entire sentence before you begin. This reflects the aliens' nonlinear worldview. Basically, once the protagonist learns their holistic written language, she can see the future. That's the big twist. Below is a, link to the original short story. It's only 39 pages. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...i7r34kDLAjZUbwIDw&sig2=XgNFOcKx3ywzAwOQouH4wQ Unless they've basically rewritten the entire story so that it bears no similarity with the source material, the "global war" tagline is ridiculously deceptive. In a USA Today article, the two movies that Jeremy Renner compared it to were: Spoiler Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Contact

I think they hit the high point there with "what are we meeting". Could have been more dramatic in the trailer but I'm at least interested. Feels close encounter like although you can tell they are going to jump right into it rather than draw it out, which may not be a good thing.
I'll see it. Science fiction junkie first class, here. Reporting for duty. Will deliver report following mission.
So it's not related to the Charlie Sheen Arrival? I always thought it was weird the Mexicans were aliens trying to heat up the planet. Shouldn't it have been the Canadians? It would have made so much more land arable for them and for Russia. #GlobalWarmingConspiracy Count me out of this Arrival. I bet Amy Adams and Emily Blunt hate each other. There can be only one!
I'll watch but I'm not really pumped about Amy Adams being the anchor star of the movie. Given Hollywood's formulaic bent, I am worried that it will turn into a chick flick with AA at the forefront.
I'm the only person at my theater about to watch this right now. Americans have no taste in movies or politics these days.
