AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The University of Texas at Austin is creating a gaming academy by teaming up with leaders in the industry.

The school said Monday that the Denius-Sams Gaming Academy will begin in fall 2014 with a focus on training students to become game development team leaders.

Warren Spector, a 30-year veteran of the video game industry known for work on "Ultima" and "System Shock," will guide the curriculum. He and Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment, will serve as part-time instructors.

Students attending the academy will earn a post-baccalaureate certificate instead of a graduate degree. The academy will include a 12-month program in which students will create a small-scale game. There are only 20 spots available next year for the academy.

This is what my 7-yr old says he wants to be. Hope the program lasts another 11 years.

So that is what Warren is going to be doing - great, now I have to unwind his feature creep-itis.

    ;)

Talk about money down the drain. Get a computer science degree instead.

I was thinking the same. A CS degree would make you more well-balanced, right?

Doesn't appear to be a degree. It's a certificate you get after you get your bachelors.

Gaming could be graphic artist, game music, game marketing, game coding, database, etc. I am assuming that's what they mean when they say gaming academy. So it is not a pure CS type degree.

 That's even funnier... you know they're not going to learn that at all. They're going to skip that "marketing" or "business side" of gaming every day of the class.
