Schaub doesn't get a lot of people's respect because he just isn't flashy and from a purely superficial observations, he doesn't "wow" you. I've grown to accept that people will not change their opinions of him for that exact same reason. It's just tough for the masses to appreciate his all the little things he does. He reads defenses well, he goes through his progressions well, makes good decisions a high percentage of the time, has good accuracy, has patients to let plays develop, even in the face of big time pressure. Those attributes just don't jump out to you easily but they are what make a good QB good.
And is consistently among the league leaders in YPA. Also, I forgot to add this in the OP, but in his last 8 starts, he's been sacked 6 times. So in 8 straight starts, he's averaging 8.5 YPA (27 att/game) and he's totaled - *totaled!*- 8 sacks+TOs. Just incredible how efficient he's been over this stretch. I hope Albert Haynesworth lives a miserable rest of his life.
Romo threw 5 INTs in last nights game. In contrast, Schaub has thrown 5 INTs in his last 13 games combined.
His efficiency is outstanding this year. My one annoyance with Schaub in the past seasons was that he was called a "rhythm passer", and throwing one or two picks were just a price to pay for him getting into his zone, so he always ended up around 2:1 TD/INT. Being league low in starters getting sacked, not too shabby as well.
Six and ten combined. How's that eliteness working out for them again? Guess they need to polish harder.
Peyton, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers can carry an offense with mediocre offensive players around them. Hell, just look at what happened to the Colts last season. Schaub is not on this level, but I don't think anyone is arguing this. To note the above comment they still need a capable defense if they want to go far however.
2005 New England Patriots had an old Corey Dillon at RB that averaged 3.5 YPG and rushed for 733 yards, and their two leading WR's were Deion Branch and David Givens.
Strong enough for me: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dA4YwFCddIA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Personally, I don't care if you can heave it 75 yards. Put it where it needs to be when it needs to be there. That's plenty good enough.
That was, from a parts perspective, absolutely a terrible offense. But defensively... my gosh: Seymour, McGinnest, Wilfork, Bruschi, Johsnon, Vrabel, Law, Samuel, Harrison… They were loaded. So while Brady made a collection of offensive mediocrity hum, he didn’t by any stretch single-handedly carry that team by himself. The defense allowed 12 or fewer points in 8 of their 19 games (including the playoffs), and fewer than 20 11 times. A mediocre QB is going to post quite a few Ws in that environment. There has never been a Super Bowl champion that wasn’t loaded. This idea that elite QBs are dragging otherwise terrible teams to the podium is, and always has been, ludicrous.
Schaub was doing that before, Schaub was carrying the texans team, he got 4,700 passing yards in one season. He was putting the team in position to win, but a crappy kicker (K. Brown) or a terrible defense (a lot of games in 10) stopped him for winning. and like you said, those QBs need a capable defense, and the texans didnt have till last year a capable defense. so your description of those QBs could fit Schaub (carrying a mediocre offense, but still needing a capable defense).
