The New Orleans Saints have placed their exclusive-rights franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees, the team confirmed Saturday.

The Saints were unable to agree to a long-term deal with Brees and didn't want to risk losing him in free agency.

Brees is seeking a contract that averages $23 million per season for the first three years of his deal, sources told Schefter. That's the same amount Peyton Manning's Colts contract averages the first three seasons.

But the Saints are offering Brees a five-year contract that averages $18 million a year, sources told Schefter, which is the average that Manning and New England's Tom Brady are due to earn over the life of their deals.

Personally, I think it's a weak move and he deserves a long term deal.

Is it really that awful a move when the numbers are so freaking high? Nominally I understand the economic impact of the franchise tag, but a raise and the five highest salaries at your position seem fair.

I don't think anyone had any idea you meant exclusive rights. OF COURSE they have exclusive rights, that's what the franchise tag is for!

Brees is upset with the franchise tag:

Drew Brees is "livid" about being franchise tagged and not receiving a long-term contract, according to WIST-AM in New Orleans. The radio station cites sources in the Brees camp that he will not sign the franchise tag deal. Brees and the Saints have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal. If a deal isn't struck, Brees must sign the franchise tag deal or hold out.

He is a great QB. No question about it. But... I doubt he would be as effective away from Sean Peyton's scheme. In other words, I don't envision any other teams valuing him at 23 million.
