Meh, it's just a waste, I'd imagine most teams are laughing at us right now, but at least we didn't give up more than that for a QB bust
Even better. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Terms: The <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Texans?src=hash">#Texans</a> traded a 2016 conditional 7th round pick for <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Patriots?src=hash">#Patriots</a> QB Ryan Mallett, source said.</p>— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/statuses/506145453160038400">August 31, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Having a bad season where the team tanks is one thing, making senseless trades for worthless players is another. Mallett would have been cut but the Pats knew the Texans were foolish enough to give up something for him. Anyway it's not that big a deal, we didn't get better, we probably didn't get worse, all that happened is we pissed away a pick.
Other than the first game what little Fitzpatrick played looked ok. He will play every play if he's not injured. We haven't even seen him throw to AJ yet and from the look of the offense we have seen, AJ could average 8 for 80 without Fitz even having to make risky throws. Swapping a #2 is no big deal except hedging a little if Fitz gets hurt. The one thing we know Mallet has is a big arm so he is one step up. UH should hire Keenum tomorrow.
Turns out all we gave up was a conditional 7th rounder in 2016 so it's really no big deal. We traded a throwaway pick for a throwaway player.
I am convinced that BOB thinks he can "fix" Mallet and make him into a starter. If he can, Mallet is physically huge, has a cannon arm, and knows BOB's system. He was impressive at Arkansas, not so much at the Patriots. He just got beat out by a rookie. Interestingly, his responses to Gruden's questions were pretty good. This is a low risk, possible high reward move. Very curious to see how this works out.
If Mallet's a "throwaway" player... what would you call Keenum? Obviously Bill O'Brien is better equipped to figure out which player has more promise... and thus he chose the one he wanted.
Dude, its a conditional seventh round pick two years from now. Not like we gave them a top 20 pick. Sounds like it could end up with us giving them nothing. Let's let the details unravel before blowing a gasket.
Would've been free if the Cowboys hadn't poked their nose in the deal. Calling a 7th round pick for a QB rental "foolish" when you have the Texans QB situation? Really? Foolish would be doing nothing and sitting on your ass while the franchise sinks deeper into the crapper. Low risk, shrewd move. Turn over every stone, especially when it costs you virtually nothing to do so. This is a Morey-esqe trade.
I don't like Ryan Mallett any more than anyone else, but a 7th-round pick is worth a try. At some point in the season, Fitzpatrick is going to disintegrate and Mallett or Savage will get the chance to start.
From what I can tell Dallas was in trade talks. If we wanted Mallet we couldn't wait it out and the pick we gave up amounts to nothing. Although I sense you are just complaining for the sake of complaining because it was your boy who you were championing that got cut.
Mallett only completed 14 of 26 passes this preseason with one touchdown, and doesn’t look like he has improved that much in his four years in Foxborough. Forget the stats though, because this is the preseason. Matt Cassel didn’t look so hot in the 2008 preseason, then he went out and won 11 games. Mallett just doesn’t look like he has developed much confidence or poise in the pocket. He has a big arm, but isn’t very decisive, and is too inconsistent with his touch on short passes. The cerebral part of the game is where Mallett trails Brady and Garoppolo in a big way. He wasn’t known as a Rhodes Scholar when he came out of Arkansas, but he just doesn’t process information as quickly as necessary to thrive in New England’s offense. Mallett has a place in the NFL. If the Patriots set him free, he’ll be snapped up by another team to come in as a No. 2 or 3 quarterback. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2...ace-foxboro/6SWWmFyF4uivVfpr1dFHVN/story.html Also, the patriots took Garapolo in the second round, earlier than Mallet and earlier than the Texans would have if he had still been on the board. They may have had a third round grade and #1 available, but we will never know.
