Good point, but somehow we just have to be able to throw it for first downs to take the pressure off Foster. Once Foster goes down or takes a breather, how do we get to the marker? The inability to get to the first down marker in the first half passing last Sunday basically hamstrung the team.
Texans need to go deep more. Perhaps BOB can order Fitz to overthrow everyone ON PURPOSE. This avoids an INT, but still puts the deep threat in the defense's mind. Do that once, early in the game on 2nd and <5. You still have 3rd down to get the1st and it might open things underneath throughout the game. Reality is, this team must lean on the defense to win. The defense can't just be pretty good, it needs to be great. Clowney has barely played so there's hope. We need him healthy.
I agree on the deeper throws, but it's either he doesn't have the arm for it. All the deep throws Ive seen from him is then the WR has the man beat. He doesn't have any timing throws yet deep completed.
^^^This^^^ Fitz is a gunslinger at heart - let him throw it when deep in enemy territory or throw it deep - we have a future HoF and a young gun with great hands out there so why not? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Texans are dumbing down the running game for him, so they need to compensate.
That would require the O-line to actually slow down the rush and pick up the blitzer, something they have not done yet. One thing that could work to get the ball deep would be a bootleg off of play action to Arian. I would run it a couple of times a game but apparently it's just not in BOB;s playbook. I'm guessing that Mallet would get sacked a lot since he's not a 'nifty' as Fitz. Fitz's little scramble runs are lifesavers and we don't know if Mallet can do that.
But some of that - and I'm not willing to put a number on it... but some of it is because the defense fully understands that our QB can't hurt them deep and, generally, isn't consistently accurate. Change those two dynamics... and maybe the OL looks remarkably improved. I'm just sayin'...
Fitz wouldn't be great behind the 95 Cowboy's O-line, but our pass protection has been pretty terrible (though the run blocking has been pretty good) and the blitz pick-ups worse, Arian just whiffed one yesterday
BOB said, when asked how they will approach the bye week, that everything including QB will be re-evaluated. The fact that he felt the need to throw in the bolded part makes you wonder. Bye week.....that's the perfect time to make a change.
I was a "Fitzpatrick defender" (well not really a defender just that I always felt the team had bigger problems than qb)...but honestly this should be the time to make the change at this point. The team is clearly not a playoff team (the AFC this year has a lot of good teams so 9-7 is not gonna cut it), so at this point why not see if Mallet has anything to offer...best case he is awesome the team turns it around and makes playoffs (.5% chance) worst case he is awful for a few games then Savage cleans up the rest of the season and the team has another top 10 pick this year where they can take their "franchise" qb. Fitz honestly hasn't won this team a game yet this year the 4 wins have been due to Redskins - defense Raiders - Arian/defense Bills - Watt Titans - Arian/defense
We know what Fitzy can do, not a bad backup option really. Mallet is unknown. He could be worse, same, or better only one way to find out. To those saying Belechick let him go which means he sucks and is worse than Garapolo, don't forget Belechick had Brady on the bench his entire rookie year and only played him in year two after Bledsoe got a serious injury. They won the SB that year. So even the great Belechick didn't know what he had sitting behind a declining Bledsoe.
I'm honestly hoping for it. I'll be at the next game. It'd be cool to witness Mallet's possible NFL coming out party in person.
we *have* to know what we got in Mallet before the season ends If he gets a contract without having played. . .it will be beyond ridiculous If he walks without playing .. . we just gave up a pick for nothing Rocket River
