How can anybody be against this? A 6th rounder that probably wouldn't have made the team is definitely worth seeing if Mallett has anything in him (outside of meth). Very low risk move.
Of course the Texans could have drafted Jimmy G. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Another thing that the trade confirms is that Jimmy Garoppolo beat out Ryan Mallett to back up Tom Brady in New England.</p>— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) <a href="https://twitter.com/AlbertBreer/statuses/506137564647288833">August 31, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>With Texans acquisition of Ryan Mallett, Houston reportedly will releaseCase Keenum. Meh, it's just a waste of a 6th rounder, but it makes the anti-Keenum crowd happy and shutting them up is worth something.

Even if you hate Mallet, there's a lot to like here. 1) Keenum gets his release and can go to Baltimore 2) Texans fans actually have something interesting to chew on 3) They bought extremely low at a 6th round pick I wanted this to happen from day 1, and to get it done for basically free is great. I was thinking the chances of it happening were almost nothing after pre-season began, but the Texans were shrewd here and waited to get the best price. What I didn't anticipate was Dallas making a play for Mallet too. Other tea leaves to read here; Fitz has a very short leash and Jimmy G looks like the future in New England.
Highest drafted qb on the roster. I hope it pans out. None of the college guys looked like they're ready to come in and run a pro offense so I'm cool with this. Fitzy isn't long term
Mallet is a free agent after after his season. If he shows nothing, or asks for too much, he's not involved in the debate. Essentially this is a sixth round pick being traded for a spin around the block to see if you like it. There's a small chance we could buy before we get around the block. Very small.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Looks like the Texans fell for the banana in the tailpipe on Mallett.</p>— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) <a href="https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/statuses/506142299580276737">August 31, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Heh, well you'd get to see a worse QB if Mallett started, the guy is trash....then again it doesn't really matter, we still don't have any good QB's on the roster.
Even better, perhaps. This was a good move, little risk and potentially high reward. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>From what I'm hearing sounds like pick Pats receive from Texans for Mallett maxes out at a 6 based on performance. Could be less</p>— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) <a href="https://twitter.com/JasonLaCanfora/statuses/506143299510751233">August 31, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Why? Cut Harris and released Keenum, accepted Savage was awful. I prefer people own up to their mistakes and try to correct them than take the Kubiak approach of force feeding mistakes down our throats until they hopefully pan out. None of the QBs of this draft looked like much, still won't know anything until next year on any of them.
