I wouldn't be surprised if Russia starts arming the Kurds with more sophisticated weapons

I think we're in agreement on that. By "good side" my implication was being against the Daesh/ISIS death cult.

The video shot of that clearly shows that they thought the Russian helicopter was a Syrian regime one, the same one that rains barrel bombs on civilians. They'd have cause to believe that given what happens on a daily basis in Syria.

honestly, there is no good side on this one.

State department probably doing all it can on both sides to contain the fighting only amongst their foreign toy soldiers.

Having said that, what do you think about the calls for Obama to act more...uhh play harder, with the implication of putting soldiers on the ground there?

Not all Kurds are on the same page. Example: The Kurds in Iraq don't like the PKK. They also get along very well with Turkey.

Russia and Putin symbolize the giant snake of this world that only a fool would ever trust. They deliberately entered Turkey's airspace just like they have been bombing U.S supported forces "without any knowledge of it".

Yea , I think I'll take the word of our military over their's.

    Putin is seriously miscalculating here.

Something doesn't add up, though. It was estimated that the plane was in Turkish airspace for less than 20 seconds. How do you issue 10 verbal warnings and shoot a plane down in under 20 seconds?

When it is on the way to turkish space as it follows a pattern designed to keep it within a certain region to support ground forces.

I may be wrong, but I think as they approach another country's airspace warnings are given. Then when they finally enter, it is fair game to down them since they were warned repeatedly and still decided to ignore the warnings.

No it isn't fair game. Screw turkey. It is fair game to scramble jets and escort them out but shooting them down is ****ed. I hope russia blows every bit of ISIS oil headed to turkey sky high.

The plane may also have been doubling back and going over Turkish air space repeatedly as the pilot tried to look at, shoot at, or bomb whatever target was on the ground.

Makes sense. This whole thing is f-ed up. Turkey shouldn't be in NATO if they are, in any way, supporting ISIS. The alliances and enemies in this whole conflict are all just screwed up.

The radar doesn't show anything like that. I bet the SU24s get fighter escorts after this. Let's see how brave they are facing something that can shoot back.

Syria is starting to look a whole like the first and second Balkan wars that primed the pump for WWI.

Now all we need is some Turkish nationalist to assassinate Putin's nephew, followed by a Russian invasion of Turkey, and then we can sit back and let the treaty obligations take over.

    Summary of NATO's statement:

    - NATO is behind Turkey
    - NATO accepted the argumentation of Turkey about the airspace violation
    - NATO is working to avoid such conflicts in the future
    - NATO thinks the common ennemy is ISIL but however it also thinks that most of the Russian attacks was directed to areas where ISIL was inexistant
NATO is in contact with Turkey but not with Russia which is in contact with Turkey

Russia will probably drastically increase their bombing of the Turkey backed Turkmen rebel groups & probably start arming the Kurds on the side as well.

I haven't seen the radar. If you say that's not it, I believe you.

Anyway, I'm not going to join you in cheering for Russia against our NATO ally. The US supports the Free Syrian Army, who hold the territory near the breach of Turkish airspace. Russia has been hitting FSA targets despite our objections. I don't like that we're involved here, but Russia isn't exactly making common cause with us and were probably hitting targets we don't want them to attack. Whatever else Turkey is up to, shooting down the Russian plane probably aligns better with our interests.
