Orioles VP Jim Duquette said he began informing teams Saturday night that Miguel Tejada was no longer going to be traded.
Before Tejada said he'd stay on Saturday afternoon, the Orioles held several preliminary talks with Manny Ramirez's agent to discuss the parameters of an extension, according to the Washington Post. Also, the Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Astros offered Brad Lidge, Brandon Backe and Adam Everett for Tejada. Jan. 8 - 4:00 am et

    Well, at least Purpura tried!

    Thank goodness!

That's too much to give up. Backe or Lidge, not both.

As far as trade prospects go Lidge>>>>Backe. Don't overvalue Backe so much because of the postseason. He still has been unable to translate that to regular season success. That said, I have a problem with this trade too since we didn't sign a starting pitcher to replace either Clemens or Backe.

Ya know if Purpura was willing to give up this much for Tejada how was he unable to work out a 3 way deal? There has to be a team that would give up a solid bat for Lidge that the O's could have used.

Everett has close to zero value, and Backe's been a marginal regular season starter at best. Yes, I think he has the potential to improve, but the results aren't there yet, and it's unrealistic to expect other teams to bank on this improvement when he's already in his upper 20's. While this might seem like a lot to some of you, it would still be a steal from my perspective.

Hopefully this pulls some of you out of this fantasy land where it's a disappointment if we don't land Dunn, Griffey, Tejada or some other big name star. We simply don't have the tradeable assets to get that like we used to. Our farm system doesn't have the blue chip prospects it did at the time of the Beltran and Randy Johnson deals. To get one of those guys, you're going to have to part with those three (Lidge, Backe, Everett) and one of our better pitching prospects at a minimum, imo. Stud hitters don't grow on trees, and right now we don't have the resources to get it via the trade market. Lower-tier clubs like the O's and Reds don't necessarily need closers, and good teams who don't have closers (ATL) aren't willing to give up a quality run-producer every day for a one-inning specialist.

The offseason isn't a disappointment if we don't land a big bat, because we didn't really have a chance to begin with. Hopefully this trade offer shows why.

I wonder if thats what they wanted or if thats what we offered. I cannot see any way that the O's would have said no to that.

Are you kidding? If I was the O's I wouldn't take that trade. It is obviously lopsided to the 'Stros advantage; otherwise the O's would have made the trade.

I would refuse it if I were the O's GM. I'd think there are better offers elsewhere.

Everette has value tio a team like that - they do not need him to produce much offense. His defense will suffice for them and he would have batted 8th or 9th for them which is somewhere around where every other 8th or 9th hitter in the AL really is.

Backe is a little like Garcia (the one we sent to Seattle for the big Unit deal, now with the W_Sox). They will get better with age. I see as a valuable commodity despite his mediocre ML regular season numbers.

That woulda been more than fair.

Baltimore takes $$ off the books. Get a legit closer. A young starter with all the right tools and playoff success. Oh, and Adam Everett.

We're not sitting on the sidelines. It's just no one wants Adam E... :p

Seriously, I think I would have been happy with Lidge/AE, but Backe too...Oh well, I'm not the GM...We are trying to get better, but nothings happening...

I would've been OK with that trade because we would've landed Tejada, but I'm not all that torn up that it didn't go through. Backe's a solid three guy.

I like our chances as it stands. Plugging in Wilson and/or Bagwell to a team that was fifth in the league in runs scored once Berkman returned to his normal self and you've got a nice offense. Add Clemens in late May/early June and enjoy the ride once again.

agreed, drafting vy should be good for 10 or 12 extra astros wins.
