I think, because of his contract, he'll stay on the Grizz for at least another year (unless the Grizz sell him for cheap or there's a 3 way deal where Varejao gets sent elsewhere). I think that there's too many similar tier players on better contracts (Jefferson, Millsap, Smith, Ellis) that Memphis would not get a fair deal.
It allows us to deal Parsons! He's easily one of the best trade pieces we have. Gay is almost being pushed off because of his contract and acquiring him would give us the flexibility at sf to deal Parsons. And if we are matching salaries to get Gay then we'd keep almost all our cap space. AGAIN!! I would only be interested in this deal if Minny were interested in Parsons. I'd be just as interested if Minny would exchange Gay for KL, but Parsons trade price is probably higher than Gays right now. IM ONLY INTERSTED IN GAY IF WE CAN ALSO AQUIRE KEVIN LOVE.. Jeeze...
Construct a Gay trade where we keep all our talent and all out cap space. Alternatively, construct a Gay trade and a subsequent Love trade.
Keeping our cap would only matter with the Gay trade. I'd be willing to give up flexibility for both players.
Any deal for Rudy Gay would have to involve Chandler Parsons as Memphis would need that replacement at SF.
No it's not. There's a reason Shane Battier on vet min is still considered more valuable than Rudy Gay on a max contract...7 years down the road LOL. Who the hell wants a borderline allstar making more than the best players in the league?
I think it's a NEW max...around the 15M range. Gay belongs to the old max era, and would make close to 20M a year if I recall correctly.
Do you realize we only have cap space for three max players? Harden's making one max contract, Asik and Lin combined are making another max contract, and then we have space for one more max guy because the rest of the players are on vet min or rookie contracts. If you trade for Gay how can you afford having Kevin Love, Harden and Gay and still have 12 other players on the team? Even if you do manage to fit all of them in, what kind of offers can you make to both Minny and Memphis that will allow them to deal us both Kevin Love and Rudy Gay?
He'll be sought after, but at what price though? Why would he be sought out more than other players like say, Wilson Chandler or Gallinari? Athletic forwards are a dime a dozen in the league, and while Gay does have a nice mid-range shot, he's pretty much been a non-factor on a grizz team. He also becomes passive and invisible from time to time, and doesn't really play defense or rebound. Even if they made the same amount, I'd still prefer Parsons to Gay. Parsons has less talent, but he makes more of an impact on the court. He's also younger, and could become much better than Gay who's probably maxed out at this point.
I like this scenario a lot, but why would Minny want a Gay-Love swap? Maybe if Love demands a trade they can play Kirilenko at PF and have Gay play SF. T
You're missing the point. Gay in his expiring year means taking $19.3 million off the books. That's a giant reset button for most franchises. The fact that he can actually play is just gravy. He'd be a big time trade chip based on that contract alone.
He'd be too big of a trade chip. You'd want to have a franchise who'd want to clear 1/3 of their entire cap. Sure there are a lot of team who want that kind of reset button but what kind of offer would be palatable to Memphis, considering they're trying to deal him to save money in the first place? I mean, Memphis wants to use Gay as a reset button themselves, it's not they'd be willing to absorb Amare's max deal from NYC in 2014 for picks.
