They won't get 2 first-round picks unless a team loses a starting C before the trade deadline.

Good starting point for Morey since the Rockets are in a position of strength. He's betting demand for Asik will increase as the season progresses. If the Rockets keep winning and Asik continues to perform well, this could turn out quite nicely.

WE will still "contend" this year. But, in the mean time, we still want to have room to improve our future. Imagine a team that will insert itself into the top 5 of the whole NBA AND has young prospects AND has multiple draft picks (good and mediocre).

Frankly, our future is of the top 3 in the whole NBA right now and getting multiple first round, multiple second round draft picks only makes it brighter.

OKC kind of tried to do that, but their plan was kind of the watered down version of this AND they traded away a big piece of contention. We would be trading away an underutilized player that is holding 8.3 in cap.

2 1st round picks sounds like a lot but it really isn't in certain situations.

If the Rockets were to trade with the Spurs, for example and got a 1st round pick this year and one in 2016 (can't trade the 2015 one), then you get a very late 1st rounder this draft and a mid to late pick in basically 3 years, that's not that solid.

    Aren't the picks better assets?

Correct. It's a standard negotiation practice with anything. You set a high asking value so you can have bids that will negotiate down for there.

Picks are so valuable because of their flexibility and versatility, especially if they are 2014 picks.

In this draft? Heck yes two first round picks are worth it! Especially if one or both can be anywhere in the lottery. Heck, I would take a lottery pick and a mid to late first or early second. You never know who might fall in your lap come draft time.

Depends entirely on the picks in question.

Omer is playing great in the back up role and I take this as Morey is perfectly happy to keep him unless someone gives him an offer that he cant refuse.

Well back in the day teams were a lot less concerned about dealing away first round picks. A year ago Lowry was traded for just one first rounder (albeit a highly protected one so that it'd be in the lottery). So two firsts is pretty high (though not crazy given that it's just a starting asking price)

What two 1st's also implies is that Morey isn't trying for a superstar/star player in return.

I would prefer a first round pick and a back up center. Maybe they have confidence that Camby will come back strong.

I suspect Morey wants to Keep Asik. There is nothing we will get back in return that will help the team more than having Asik as backup center.

It may also imply Morey isn't trying to plug holes (stretch 4, 2-way defensive wing) which hints that the players/team in hand doesn't have some great deficit he feels he needs to plug.

That's what Morey (and I) doesn't want. Smith as back up center. That's what we had last year and it was awful. When Asik went out last year our defense was worst in the league.

I could see some team wanting to deal. Look at Boston. I'd almost take Ainge at his word that he wants to rebuild quickly and keep Rondo.

Humphries plus two first rounders for Asik and (Covington or Brewer).
