The Rockets needed practice bodies. There weren't enough healthy players to run scrimmages. They were also trying to preserve cap space. Lin's fully unguaranteed contract doesn't count toward the team's salary while a training camp contract does.
Trades rarely happen the days before opening night anyway. The Kings had very little incentive to facilitate a S&T. They're under the cap so they don't get a TE. They might have wanted one of the PGs but that price would be too high just to keep a $1.2M TE and Yao Ming's cap hold.
I'm guessing Adrien makes the team? If so, the roster should look something like this: Lowry/ Dragic/ Flynn Martin/ Lee / Williams Budinger/ Morris/ Parsons Scola/ Patterson/ Adrien Hill/ Dalembert/ Thabeet
Flynn has been McHale's primary back up point so far. Patterson is still recovering from the ankle surgery he had in August.
this sucks because jeff adrien is still on the team. jeff adrien looks like a potential solid player, but his game is a snooze fest on youtube. at least lin had sick crossovers.
