    Here's the press release...

    Rockets Sign Oscar Torres

HOUSTON - The Houston Rockets have signed guard Oscar Torres to a free agent contract, Rockets General Manager Carroll Dawson announced today.

Torres averaged 7.3 points on .625 shooting in four games with the Rockets
entry in the LA Summer Pro League this past July. The 6-6, 210-pound
shooting guard led all scorers in Houston's July 16 win over Memphis,
totaling 26 points on nine-of-12 shooting in 19 minutes.

The native of Venezuela has played professionally in his homeland for four
seasons. A member of the Venezuelan National Team, Torres has played with
Marinos de Oriente of the Venezuelan LPB League every summer from 1998
through 2001. In his first year with Marinos, his team won the 1998
Venezuelan LPB Championship. Torres, 24, has averaged over 15 points per
game in each of his last two years with Marinos. Most recently, his
represented Marinos in the 2001 Venezuelan LPB League All-Star Game.

In the summer of 2000, Torres helped Venezuela's Trotamundos de Carabobo win the South American Clubs Championship, as he teamed with former Rockets forward Carl Herrerra to defeat McDonald's Championship entry Vasco de Gama. During the 1999-2000 IBA season, Torres played for the Billings RimRockers.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

it is interesting to sign a player like this even before the preseason camps, and bringing him into camp to get a better look at what he can do.

I don't get it. Did someone slip something into CD's drink? This has been one of the strangest Rockets offseasons that I can remember.

 Where did this guy come from?? Like VOR said it is very strange that they would give this previously unknown guy a guaranteed contract so early. Does this mean no more Mooch and Mobley will backup Francis at PG (while not playing SG, of course) and this guy will be the backup SG? Could it be the sign of an agreed future trade of Walt for Jahidi White :) once his BYC expires?

Where does this leave Sean Colson? Is he gone for sure now?

I believe Colson has been out of the Rockets' plans for quite a while now. From what I've heard it sounds like performed very poorly in the summer leagues, hogging the ball and committing many turnovers, while shooting a poor percentage as well.

I think this signals a resigning of Mooch, and a strict three man rotation at guard.

Well who here thought at time that Cuttino Mobley, Moochie Norris, and Kenny Thomas would be key players for the Rockets at the time the Rockets got them? This guy could be a steal. You see all the guys who played in the CBA and over seas and see them making an impact in the NBA.

Well I'm happy with the signing of a big guard but I'm sure he's not a defensive guy more of a shooter just assuming...

I like bringing in a big guard at 6'6 210.... I'm sure he wasn't signed for big money guys.... Not like it hurts any signing of Moochie(don't we have some bird rights for Moochie).

This is probably a injury type signing what if Cat got hurt then what move Stevie over and have no depth...

    I like it personally because he's latino(Venezelano)...

I don't see how his signing hurts us, I'm sure he came here pretty cheap(not like he got 3 mil or something)...

I hope Moochie resigns but its not looking good...
I personally, am tired of Fegan and at this point would be looking at Damon Jones or there could possibly be a trade in the works especially since Fegan is involved...

I don't know about this guy. It says here that he's bad news.

Luckily though, he put up a personal page here. Perhaps we should email him and ask if he's changed his ways.

Ya know, his page lists him at only 5'7" 150, but from what I understand, he's a shooter with no conscience.

    Badabum.

    Thank You.
