Frankly, I still like the various young pieces we have.

Jones doesn't seem to have a high cieling but he is pretty decent defensively. Motiejunas with some more wieght should be able to bang with the bigs down low, adding a player with legit post moves. Robinson is atheltic as hell and has better dribble control then some of our SFs, so once he learns some offensive moves, he should be better.

That being said, I have serious doubts that McHale will be able to teach or develop any of them. But he did manage to make G. Smith a better player in the second half of the season then he was in the first until last night. Now we just have to see.

 

You just KNOW Maurie's got his eye on a PF who is currently just under the radar; someone who's on the bench behind an All-Star or who's not getting the right opportunity in a system that doesn't play to his strengths. He obviously pulled Rabbit Harden and Rabbit Asik out of that hat. I wonder who he's looking at signing as a FA or trading for in case we can't find a currently A-list PF who won't cost us all our cap space.

 

Smith would look so good in a Rockets uniform against the Thunder. Josh that is.

 

Not if he uses up all our cap space. He's good, but not him-and-Harden-get-us-a-trophy good.

 

How about Pau Gasol for the final year of his contract?

Then pick up Kevin Love next off season when Pau's 19 mill comes off the books.

 

He's already potentially made that move. His name is Thomas Robinson. We just need to continue to groom him, hope that he work hard and it pays off.

 

I've said this all season, that PF would be our biggest weakness and need. I've said that during the Playoffs, our lack of PF play will be why we lose regardless of our guard play. But on this forum it's always Lin, Lin, Harden, Mchale, Lin, Mchale, Harden.

We're essentially play 4v5 out there and have been for most of the season.

Did you know that we only have exactly ONE Forward on the roster that has more than 1 WS? And that's our Small Forward, Parsons with 7. Morris and Patterson would be the others but were traded away.

DMo, Jones, and Garcia all have .7.

Though on a PER36 basis, DMo is the more proficient scorer at 16.7, but I'm sure Ibaka will get double that if DMo starts.

The best rebounder of the bunch is TRob with 11.2 REB PER36, but again, Ibaka will go nuts off him.

That just leaves Garcia and Jones. Of the two, I think we should start Garcia at the PF. He has the height, passable defense, and leap years of experience compared to everyone else. Then interchange Jones/Garcia when needed.

Our roster is extremely guard heavy + Asik. This sorely needs to change next season.

Good point, but T-Rob is a couple of year away IF he ever gets there at all. I'm not sure I want to watch the Jones/D-Mo/Smith triumvirate hacking their way through another season while we wait.

 

They won 62 two years ago. They have Rose and three fringe all stars. They made it to the conference finals, but they didn't seriously threaten the Heat, who have improved since then.

Since Rose was hurt, we may never know for sure, but I think their ceiling is the conference finals.

That's what will happen to us if we make the wrong move, like signing Josh Smith. We'll win quite a few games, get a good seed, and get bulldozed by the Thunder in the playoffs.

 

So do you want to wait for one of those 3 to blossom into something or should we sign a player like Josh Smith even if the Max seems steep?

You and I can probably both agree Smith isn't a superstar and we can probably also agree paying him the Max is a lot and we **might** get better value elsewhere but he does address a lot of our needs and pushes other players on the roster down the depth chart. That's why I think we need to seriously consider signing a player like Josh Smith if we can't land Dwight Howard.

If we can add Smith and hope our young players continue to improve and COMPETE I think we'd be in good shape. I realize Smoove alone with Harden aren't likely the answer to a championship but it moves us a big step closer in the right direction. If we add Smith while Harden continues to improve and Parsons, Lin or Asik develp into a legit 3rd piece and one of the aforementioned Jones/D-Mo/Smith become regular contributors we can be contenders. Worst case scenario it gives us more time to groom one of the young 4's and having a player like Smith also gives us more time and less expectations from our young 4's.

 

If we add Josh Smith to this current roster we would likely push the Thunder to 6 very competitve games. I really don't think the gap between the Thunder and us is that big contrary to the way they spanked us last night. Having a player like Smith addresses a lot our weaknesses against the Thunder.

I'm not 100% positive signing Josh Smith is the right move in terms of who else is out there and the value presented but I can definitely tell you it's not the WRONG move. Some of you guys are potentially comparing us signing Smith to be as bad as the Bulls signing Boozer. I just don't see that.

Ryan Anderson over in New Orleans would be great based on how it seems the coaches wanted our PFs to play but I don't think we'd be able to get him. Especially with Davis injury history at this point and the Other Lopez twin not being Brook.

 

If you are going to consider Shawn Marion a perfect fit, then you should consider Andrei Kirilenko an even more perfect fit. He's younger, longer, just as athletic and just as efficient. I have been intrigued and am still intrigued with Kirilenko. I think a Parsons/Kirilenko tandem would be very interesting especially if he could be acquired in a S&T if we signed Dwight outright. He can shoot the 3, especially from the corners which is what we want, his defense speaks for itself, he's got a decent handle, he's unselfish, and he's ultra efficient with his offensive usage. And he's opting out of his contract, probably looking for around $40-$50 mill over 4 years. He might make a lot of sense as an alternate to JSmith or Paul Millsap if those guys go early. I know he's been playing as a 3 but he's now 32. He's got plenty of length to play most 4s effectively and have a quickness advantage on practically all of them. At the same time, he's a sensational help defender. I would be very okay if we signed him outright if Dwight didn't make it here.

 

I've always thought that AK47 was one of the most impactful players in the league, but he's getting old and he's been injury-prone recently.

 

i dont mean like that. in the playoff, its about exploiting opponent's weakness. boozers is a great finisher, very tough offensive player and a great rebounder, but he has terrible defensive awareness. i have nothing against boozer, but if his contract were lower, bulls have more flexibility on signing decent defensive players to compensate boozer's lack of defense.
