We can talk about our logjam at the 4 all day long but what no one has addressed (at least not recently) is our most glaring weakness - a defensive specialist at the back up 2 spot. I have no doubt that we will be a much improved team this year with our current team "as is" but unless we get a stopper in the backcourt we will get eaten up by Kobe if/when we meet the Lakers in the playoffs. We have our answer for Shaq now (hopefully), now we need somebody that can spell Cat and make the other team's leading back court scorer really have to work to get his points.

Who is available either through the FA market or via trade?? Are there even any backcourt defensive specialists in the league anymore??

If we needed to trade someone besides one of our excess 4s (KT or MoT) I think it should be Mooch. A previous thread talks about how the trade value of Moochie is relatively high right now with the abscence of quality FAs and the number of teams wanting/needing a PG. Whoever we get at the backup 2 should be able to play the point for brief stretches of time. If Steve goes down for any extended period of time, we would just play Tierre who, based on Summer League, is ready to move up into the backup role anyways.

Notice it says "an" answer, and not "the" answer.

C-A-T Wow I guess Im the new man in Houston, but seriously With Moochie on the team I think you can let cat breathe and bring in Moochie at the point and drop Steve to the SG an dyou should be fine, Steve is our answer at the 2 when Moochie is in.

How long did Cat sit the bench last yr? when he was healthy it wasnt long at all, I think once Cat has rested some, then drop Steve out and place cat back in the game,

Hey I will admit, I dont have all the answers, but Thats a darn good formula for keeping a star in at all times

As much as I hate to admit it, nobody can stop Shaq, and nobody can stop Kobe. The Rockets goal next year is to get back to the playoffs. We can worry about bringing down the Lakers when we get to Sac-town's level. The idea to try to acquire a defensive-minded 2 is a good idea, but I think we would be better served by trying to work on improving our team defense with the players we have now. With work, I think Cat and Oscar Torres can both be decent defenders. The whole team needs to get a clue about the importance of defense and be willing to make the sacrifices it takes to become better on that side of the ball.

I really dislike defensive 2's. Sort of a reversal for me, since I liked Shandon Anderson when he was here...

...but I've come around to the belief that perimeter defense is less valuable than interior defense... and that no defensive 2, no matter how good ,will ever make up for the scoring they give up in-balance.

Sure, Bowen might knock 5 points off Kobe's average. But if Kobe out scores him 20-10... then he's still getting badly outplayed.

I'd rather have a player who can score 18 and let Kobe score his 25.

I don't mind players in the interior who just play defense - after all, a key shot blocker can be a huge difference maker. But I just don't think a guard can have that effect, and I think you need offense, badly, from that position.

Rather, I suggest the Rockets acquire a pure shooter in a back-up 2, since they don't have one at all right now (unless you actually believe Rice will stay healthy).

OT is a great defrender, but his O is really off. I hope he shapes up by training camp. I think jis only problem is his confidence, did you notice he changed his shot form when he started slumping. He is thinking too much, he needs to relax.

    haven,

Bruce Bowen doesn't just "knock off 5 points" from Kobe. he knocks off around 8, 2 assists maybe, 2 rebounds, and hands him 1 or 2 TO's. That's the difference.

If we wanted to outscore Kobe at the 2, there's no betetr lpayer than Cat. But when we're in the 4th, and the other team can count on Kobe in every single play for 2 points, that's when you realize the glaring need.

But I do agree with your assesment of interior defense. I do believe that our guards will look much better defensively now that we have Ming, Cato and Griffin playing big minutes in the frontcourt. We can count on an average of 5 blocks/game between those 3. That's pretty amazing. Consider how much better than last year that is. Then consider how much better our defense at the 4 improves with Griffin bulking up a bit and playing more minutes. Consider how Ming's height will automatically change some shots.

Cat was already decent defensively. But from the attantion the team gets from Ming and playoffs, and the improved shotblocking/interior defense, Cat is finally going to get his props this season.

Look for these numbers from Cat:

    21ppg, 4rpg, 3ast, 37min/game, FG45%, 3PT38%

Also for him, a 44 point game.

Cat can make these things happen by just trying as hard as he always does.

Having watched last night a Rocket/Kings game, I am worried about both the 3 and 2 spots, defensively, but more so the 3 spot. At the moment we are looking for Rice and Nachbar to play the 3, both of which have been singled out for their defensive weaknesses. At the 2 I am less concerned because Mobley and Torres are good defensive players and I would not sacrifice their offense for bringing any defensive specialist. With the 3 spot we have to factor in both KT and Tmo for their defense. So based on the matchup, we would have to utilize one of the four. That is the beauty of our team, versatility.

Agreed. D at the 3 more likely value upgrade with MCE/FA/trade.

The Mavs might trade you Adrian Griffin or Abdul-Wahad for one of the people you have logjammed at the 4.
