Question: after four years does he become a restricted or unrestricted free agent?

What? If he turns out to be a decent 2nd string center you wanna get rid of landry to bring in another point guard and sign the oldest man in the leauge to another year?....Isiah Thomas? is that you?

that's a bargain. It's easy to find a beefy guy like dorsey on the football field but finding such a guy on basketball court is different. on the court court, dorsey is just like a moving wall that will bever be knock down. the only two players I think of who have as strong body as dorsey are just lbj and d howard. plus, morey used his magic once more and sign the beast at such a prize that 3/4. it's no doubt a great news for rockets, but it's bad for texans because they have missed another beefy guy like mario williams.

If Deke can bring what he brought last year then yes.

You say another guard as though we have a bunch of reliable ones. Lets count together and if you still don't understand it I'll introduce you to my 2nd grade math teacher, she's good!

    1) Rafer, starting line up of course.

    2) ABrooks, didn't prove himself last year, shame too. (in other words not yet reliable)

    3) Francis, he admit he wouldn't be ready for the first half of the season. (in other words no)

    4) Wait who the hell is the fourth? You said another as though we were loaded. LMAO! Please don't tell me me Barry, if so I don't think my math teach can help you.

So we got 1 reliable and 2 unreliable's.....you do the math (leaves only one reliable....)

If he does well, he could be magnificent trade bait at the deadline.

For reference, the 30th pick in the draft, just 4 slots ahead of Dorsey, would have a contract with $4.2m through 4 years. Essentially, a 15+% discount for being picked just a few picks later.

As the article mentions, we get the option on Dorsey at the end of the year -- this is a HUGE advantage relative to the rookie scale -- first round picks have to be extended by October 31 in their 2nd year. That leaves just 1 year and 1 summer, as opposed getting to see the player the whole second year. Given how critical the sophomore season usually is for a player's development, that's a big difference.

It is worth noting something interesting about the contract structure. If we decline the team option after the 3rd season, Dorsey would be a restricted free agent. If we exercised both options, Dorsey would be an unrestricted free agent following year 4. In both scenarios, we would have full Bird rights. Should Dorsey somehow become a stud contributor, it may create the incentive to decline the option after year 3 and lock him up long term without the risk of losing him due to our ability to match an offer.

The kid has not played a single game in the NBA, yet you guys are talking about how this is a great deal, who knows, the guy is unknown commodity. He may be as useful as the bench water boy.

Isn't that how Carlos Boozered the Cavs? Seemed like a similar scenario.

We're kinda going by Morey's ability to find gems in the 2nd round. Granted, he only has Landry to show for it, but Morey is God around here. ;)

Except that it was after the 2nd year, which meant the Cavs only had Early Bird Rights, not Full Bird Rights.

Regardless, that "loophole" was closed in the current CBA.

less then 800 a year for 2 years isn't a big risk for a possible high output

Well he probably did it to get some extra money in the contract - that is, instead of the min of $400k? per year for 2 years, he now gets $800k per year for 4 years but at the cost of the Rockets having an option on his contract in the last 2 years.

Good deal? Time will tell, but an extra $800k over 2 years for that option isn't bad...

deke could have sign for the vet min, and hence will not cost during the LT. Tell morey to get him a shoe deal. It more than balance it out.

good point. and if so, then he's getting paid correctly and we can let his contract expire after next season. however, if he turns out to be a lot better than expected the rockets have him on a 4 year miniscule deal.

great contract from the rockets POV.

This is a great deal not because Dorsey IS a great player today. It's a great deal in terms of managing the risk - this deal put Rox in a absolute 0 risk position. See NIKEstrad's post just above yours.
