Bizarre thought, but could the Nets be trying to load up things to ultimately trade with Orlando? Kind of a stupid way to do it, but I can't think of anything else to justify their interest in non-Dwight Howard moves.

The last thing that ORL wants if they are trading away Dwight Howard are vets signed to long term deals (Scola's only got 2, but Johnson's got 4 years and Wallace will require a 3 or 4 year deal for sure).

Multiple league sources believe the Nets are losing hope they can pry Howard out of Orlando, and are working diligently to construct a roster to keep Williams that doesn't necessarily give them the financial flexibility to absorb Howard when he can become a free agent next year. If the Magic do eventually make a deal for Howard – something that they haven't shown an inclination yet to do under new general manager Rob Hennigan – the Nets would be stocked with the kind of expensive veteran contracts that wouldn't appeal to Orlando's blueprint for rebuilding. - Woj

Orlando Needs to hurry up and decide who the hell they want to be.

The can either be Denver and get back players who can keep them in the hunt for the playoffs or they can be Cleveland and get a large Trade exception and draft pics and start rebuilding.

The only other trade package is to replace Farmar with Morrow. That's all their expiring contracts

People, you do realize that it is BETTER for the Rockets to wait until July 11 to make a Scola trade with Brooklyn than it would be to make one right now, don't you???

The Nets are currently only slightly below the salary cap. In order for a Scola trade to work tonight (before 11:00 pm), the Rockets would most likely have to take back TWO expiring contracts from Brooklyn (likely Morrow and Petro) to make the salary cap math work.

However, if the teams wait until July 11, the Nets will be wayyyy below the cap and will be able to absorb Scola's contract easily. Now, the Rockets will still likely have to take back an expiring contract (Petro?), but the 11 day wait could mean a $4-5M increase to the Rockets' available cap room.

Frankly, that's worth an 11-day wait to me.

Also, if the pick involved is the Rockets' own future first rounder (traded to the Nets in the Terrence Williams deal), it will give Morey much more flexibility to offer future first rounders in trade packages this summer. If a deal can be reached in principle with Brooklyn in the next 11 days to get that pick back, the Rockets can offer up any number of picks or combinations thereof to entice other teams to cough up All-Star caliber players.

    Yes, please.

Scola is aging and our team is rebuilding.
No point in keeping him, he's a player for a contending squad not for a rebuilding squad.

Actually, the last thing they need to do is to hurry up. They need to wait. Wait until the Nets are no longer a possibility either because Deron leaves or because they are stocked with expensive contracts so Dwight can't even threaten to sign there in 2013.

Then, Dwight has to choose a new team that he'd accept a trade to, one that actually has assets to trade for him, or come back to Orlando and have to take pay cut when he signs a new contract in 2013. If he chooses a new team that he'd agree to stay with, then that team will be willing to pay "non-rental" price for him instead of "rental price." For example, maybe the Lakers now include Bynum for "non-rental Dwight."

Why use this cap space after July 11 on Scola when they can use it on Dwight?

    (1) Dwight Howard is not a free agent.

    (2) The Orlando Magic have zero interest in anything the Nets have to offer for Howard in trade.

There's a REASON Billy King is exploring trades for guys like Joe Johnson and Luis Scola. They're giving up hope of trading for Howard.

Further evidencing the fact that folks are giving up hope for this trade: Dwight asking the NBA Players Association to sue the Magic for "blackmailing" him (whatever that means).

When Dwight is throwing a tantrum, you know he ain't getting his way.

But by trading for Scola and/or Johnson it would deplete the cap space Brooklyn could use on Howard during Free Agency of 2013, no? I mean, Dwight is making it no secret that he wishes to play for the Nets.

Now you are catching on. This tells you that Dwight has no intention of actually leaving as an UFA. He wants the max salary possible, which is exactly why Morey was willing to trade for him as a "rental".

BAM, hit it right on the head

This is exactly why I was willing to sift through one year of headaches with Dwight... when push comes to shove, it's painfully obvious that he's not going to pass up all that extra money.

Bird rights in the hand are worth more then loosing a year of guaranteed money in the bush.

He realized he wasn't going to get all of that extra money in Brooklyn, so he opted in and hoped he would be able to do swing a trade to Brooklyn this year.

He's an idiot, though, because everyone and their grandmother knew the Nets were going to have nothing at all to offer the Magic this season.
