My parents used to take me there when I was a wee lad. There was a room in the back with some blankets and toys and I would curl up in the corner and sleep. RIP old guy. You were at the center of the urban cowboy/1970's country revolution.
I completely forgot about those commercials and the jingle. lol. I just remembered that UFO office building or whatever that was, too.
I had him on my Covid death pool. saw him at the san Leon oyster fest a few years ago. Already looked half dead
Honestly, I was surprised he was still alive. He ran the Studio 54 of country and western, so I’m sure he partied hard.
went there as a kid with my mom. rode the bull. had a great time. about 9pm the place became "adults only" and then I spent the rest of the night in the cab of my moms truck with my coleco electronic football game. I saw things in that parking lot 9 year old kids should never see, a bunch of drug deals, sex and fights. looking back on it what a good time and I had a low bar for parenting.... I never once left my kids in the car of the worlds largest honkey tonk until driving home drunk at 2am. RIP Mickey Gilley
Thanks Mickey for putting Houston on the map back in the early 80's. Urban Cowboy was a staple of my youth. It's one of those movies I can almost recite the entire dialog from start to finish. I still think the soundtrack is one of the best movie soundtracks ever. Listened to it all day long yesterday by the pool with the wife. Funny story - when my mom and dad first moved to Houston back in the late 60's, they rented an apartment and it had a pool. They used to see this weird looking guy sitting by the pool every day singing and playing his guitar. My dad told my mom that he would never make it. It was Mickey Gilley.
I remember in elementary, all the girls loved Anne Murray's "Could I Have This Dance". I still love that song. I had to look back at what else was on that soundtrack, but "Looking For Love" was another awesome song I used to sing along with as a kid. My parents were like "you're like 10..." Then of course, I still think of Eddie Murphy and Buckwheat with his Wookin Puh Nub skit. lol. But man, that was a great song, too. Then, of course, the Devil Went Down to Georgia. Holy Hell, I forgot that was in that movie. Still one of the baddest rap songs EVER. Also forgot the Eagles' Lyin' Eyes was on there, too. Wow, you weren't kidding... lot of great songs on that soundtrack that I never remembered were on there.
So many great lines: "Fine! Fergit it!" "God, Bud! Y'all live like pigs!" "My legs are sweatin', Momma." "I can spell, boy!" RIP Mickey
