I would agree with it if we also cut a lot of the tax loopholes and write offs used by those at the other end.

The cap on payroll tax is the most regressive tax for the lower and middle class and a tax all lower class people pay. For some reason they never count it as part of the tax equity conversation.

Does the GOP not understand that eliminating the EITC and/or increasing taxes on lower income folks would predominantly effect their base??

The numbers are very clear. Blue states like CA and NY subsidize red states like KY and MS in terms of income tax dollars.

All these people who need skin in the game vote Republican. You want to cut off your nose to spite your face go for it.

While you are at it let’s eliminate Medicaid, Medicare and SS. Those socialist entitlements! Considering 2/3 of Medicaid dollars go to seniors for nursing home care and seniors tend to vote Republican let’s hurt them some more too!

It’s really mind boggling. Conservatives are the takers in the economy not the producers.

It should be a talking point for Democrats.

They could bring it up over and over, put out messages about Republican tax increases aimed at the middle and lower classes. They could saturate cable news and social media to help that label stick.

So that means that in actuality Democrats won't mention it other than once or twice in passing.

They do understand, but they also understand that most voters don't know how things work and that we live in a propaganda world. They can easily blame democrats for it and their base will believe it.

Do not underestimate the politics of grievance with the MAGA right. Proposals to pass laws to undo or sabotage AMT and force higher taxes onto low income Americans will play better than some might think.

I'm sure we've all heard the made up story before from our racist uncle about how he was at the store the other day and he saw a black woman paying for Lobster tails with food stamps. I've heard that story probably 100 times.

There is a TON of grievance about perceived benefits that white people think poor black and brown people get on social programs and tax breaks like the AMT. I think this being included in Rick Scott's platform is no surprise given how tuned in he is to the politics of grievance over logic & reason.

100%. One of the most appealing things to lower income white people is saying you are going to tax lower income minorities.

Yeah if this is a preview of the 2022/24 platform, the Dems need to jump on this in force before the right wing propaganda machine can control the narrative. You can't allow this to become where Dems have to explain tax policy as a defensive position no matter how much sense it will make for me and you. If you have to wait for Chuck Todd to ask you about it with his GOP framing, you're losing the narrative.

Republicans will be selling the grievance of black and brown poor people stealing from you hard working white folk. It's a simple narrative and one where if you don't get in front of that, it'll stick because the MAGA base already believes it... they just haven't yet had the intellectual capacity to link AMT and other tax policies to what they already believe. They can already understand food stamps which is why they are already okay with signing off on eliminating those programs no questions asked.

Allowing Republicans the governing capacity to rewrite tax laws though.... assuming that's the goal here in 2025 to pass through reconciliation a Federal Bill that really does strip out much of the tax structure we've relied on to supplement lower earning workers.... holy crap... it could be devastating.

The GOP is turning into the Bourgeois class - at some point their base will figure out that they have been played for as fools and turn on their grifting....
