I didn't recognize Karl Lane's photo without the basketball bouncing off the back of his bald head

 

All I can think is he thought he was compelled to get closer in order to keep an eye on Harden ... to see if he's breaking the Harden rule and hooking someone, per the ESPN-Mandated point of emphasis to screw Harden this year.

I actually think that's what he was doing.
