I don't know how many people here listen to rap, but I just thought I would start a thread with so new and fresh rappers that are coming out. With the current state of rap/hip-hop and all those annoying catchy dance songs, here are just some fresh rappers talking about things that aren't clap, twist, and jump.... I already mentioned him/them in the Common thread, but I'll do it again: http://www.myspace.com/wadewaters http://www.myspace.com/soulstice Wade Waters: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_fe0Smgvwh0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_fe0Smgvwh0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> More along the lines of Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli etc. They've got two releases under their belt and Soulstice (one-half of Wade Waters) has one out and one coming up. They've had great reviews from critics, and I hope they reach a more mainstream audience soon, they deserve it. Check out their backgrounds on their MySpace pages, pretty impressive.
Other than Jay Rock's Lift Me Up and the Strong Arm Steady (S.A.S.) One Step, the other videos aren't official videos for the singles yet. So the other videos are just pictures/clips that fans put together along with the music. I just didn't want to upload the tracks so I used Youtube.
every rapper looks like he's taking a dump. For me rap reached its pinnacle with "changes" for deep philosophical thinking, and "juicy" for lounging around and being uh not so philosophical.
I don't know, maybe I am just getting older (26) and not as much into rap/hip hop but those artists don't sound good at all. They have decent lyrics but their delivery/voice is just not there for me and the subject matter may be better than radio rap that is out there but it is still not deep and all over the place. The only ones that sounded decent in the ones posted here were Soulstice/Wadewaters. I don't think it is b/c I am getting older b/c I can still jam Pac, Biggie, Jay, X, Common, Mos Def, Talbib, Nas, Kanye and Em. I still remember popping in Pac's "Me against the World" "All eyes on me", Biggie's "Life after Death", X's "It's dark and hell is hot" and just being blown away by their rawness, delivery, storytelling and imagery. You can literally feel their hunger, passion and life with their words. Now you just have rappers, not artists. It's like that "it" people talk about in athletes, they had it. These new fools just don't. But that is the beauty of music, everyone has their personal taste and it doesn't matter what I or others think so long as it moves you and entertains you.
The reason the subject matter doesn't really seem that good is because the songs I posted are radio singles and are meant to be more club friendly. But if you listen to their other songs such as Bishop's Klansmen or HISstory you will be much more pleased. Or if you listen to Jay Rock's Can't Complain or Victory Lap where he actually touches on topics such as his childhood and stuff its much deeper. When I first moved to the US, I lived in the same place this dude did and let me tell you something, **** is difficult. He grew up and still lives in the Nickerson Garden projects which is a very dangerous place. I only lived there for a little while and then moved to Santa Monica. So he actually has some meaning ful things to take about.
Screw those dudes. I'll stick to the classics. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dE9oiMLIHGA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dE9oiMLIHGA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Who murdered rap? some say it was the capitalist. others say it was a democrat. was it carson daly; or maybe chingo bling? It used to be a form of expression, now it says....... nothing. my favorite rap album of all time has to be illmatic. i've given post 2000 rap a chance; but it lost me somewhere around 2002-2003.
My negative opinion is below. Do not open the spoiler if you don't want to hear a negative opintion. Spoiler Sounds the same to me. I now get to the point where, after about 20 seconds, I think "ugh... just shut up... blah blah blu blah blah blah... shut.. up... you have nothing to say that I have any interest in hearing."
Yeah, yeah, yeah, believe me, I listen to a lot less hip-hop than I used to. And I don't like most of the stuff I hear in the club or radio, etc. And when I do listen to hip-hop it's mostly early 90's Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, etc. But the truth is there's just as much good music now as there used to be. It might be harder to find, or maybe you aren't trying hard enough to find it. I'm guilty of it too.
not a new artist, but damn I love this song... Scott Storch might be a nice guy, but he appears to look like a douche in every picture I've ever seen of him. I think it has something to do with those sunglasses he wears day or night.
