    here is the aricle:

RICHMOND, Va. -- Ralph Sampson pleaded not guilty Friday to federal charges of failing to pay court-ordered child support, and he is scheduled for trial Sept. 14.

The former Houston Rockets star entered his plea on the two felony counts. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Sampson's federal public defender waived his client's right to a speedy trial date, which would have to be before Aug. 22.

"We're trying to work something out with the government -- an agreement," Robert J. Wagner said.

    Sampson declined to comment.

He was arrested May 13 in Atlanta, nine days after a grand jury indicted him.

One count alleges Sampson failed to meet child support for a daughter in Falmouth. Prosecutors contend he is more than $6,000 in arrears to that child. The payments were ordered by a judge who placed Sampson on two years' probation in 2003.

The other count contends Sampson has not complied with a 1988 order to pay another daughter in Alexandria $1,500 monthly. U.S. Attorney Paul J. McNulty contends Sampson owed nearly $250,000 in that case.

The 7-foot-4 Sampson starred at Virginia and was drafted No. 1 overall by Houston in 1983. In nine NBA seasons, he scored 7,039 points, averaging 15.4.
