I was playing Uncharted 2 Beta, then tried to quit the game. The system hung for a second, then did three beeps and a flashing red light. I tried to start my PS3 up and now it's doing a flashing red light then green light. I'm guessing this isn't good news. I can't eject the game I had in there either. Anyone ever had this problem or fixed it themselves?
Yellow light of death... Your ps3 over heated and its a power issue, thats what they told me when I called sony when my ps3 did this to me on friday. You have to send it to Sony. Hopefully its still under warranty, if not its going to cost you $149
Can you just UNPLUG IT, place it in an open-air space in the room, fire it up again, and check it? Still, it shouldn't happen. Good luck with that, sir. I'd hate to have something like that happen to mine. "THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!"
Yep, you have the "Yellow Light of Death" - the PS3 equivalent to the Xbox 360's Red Ring of Death. In 90% of cases, it is because the solder on the circuit board has lost its connection with the CPU and/or GPU, or the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU has worn out. You have a few options: 1) If you are still under warranty, you can send it to Sony and they will repair/replace* it for free. 2) If you are not under warranty, you can send it to Sony and they will repair/replace* it for $150. 3) If you feel confident enough, you can take the PS3 apart, reflow the circuitboard, and apply new thermal paste (not as hard as it sounds, and if you are outside of warranty it doesn't really hurt to try if you feel confident about disassembling electronics). *Replacements would be with a refurbished unit. Is your PS3 a 60GB model by any chance? Personally, I would rather give it too much space than not enough. You don't want to have it in an enclosed entertainment center, or anywhere else where there is something that is within a few inches of one of the vents. Personally, I try to always keep it out in the open with at least 6+ in of space on all vented sides. I'd rather be overly cautious just so I don't have to worry about taking it apart to fix it or spending another $150 for Sony to fix it.
I always turn on the ceiling fan when it is on, but that is just to keep from it being a space heater. Hopefully it is enough.
Sweet justice. Although I feel bad that your system broke down, I'm so happy that us Xbox360 owners are not alone in our suffering. Thats why I love SNES. 17 years old and still going strong.
The Uncharted 2 beta makes my 60gig hard boot every time I try to exit it. If you have to send it in, my experience with Sony was quite good. I got a new unit in less than a week.
I remember when my PS3 broke because I used to just flip the switch instead of logging it off, I thought you could turn it off like my PS2. It's pretty pathetic that we pay all this money for a PS3 or X-box 360 but yet it breaks easier than the cheap PS2 or Regular X-box.
It's almost bound to happen with any piece of complicated electronics nowadays, even more so if you are an early adopter. The Xbox 360 problem was an issue because of the high failure rate resulting from the RROD. The PS2 even had problems with some of the units (disc read errors, if I remember correctly). If you want to feel even more happy, the Blu-Ray drive can break down on some PS3s, though I don't know why you'd want to feel happy about people's stuff breaking.
Come to think of it. My 360 has crapped out on me(not RROD, but a disc read error). My PS2 had a disc read error. My PS wouldn't save. I think if you put a card in the controller would stop working. It was terrible. I played FF8 and died on the 3rd disc and had to start all over. Its these problems that make removing backwards compatibility suck so much.
I'm curious, I own a 60gb full BC (it's still working fine of course), but what's the difference in terms of warranty stuff right now? If i had to send it in, would they give me a crappy 80gb one back?
With mine - I was offered a replacement - repair wasn't offered. No - you'll get a referb 60gig if one is in their stock. You'll only get an 80 if there are no 60s available anywhere. And if you send it in, you won't get yours back, you get one that's already been fixed and packaged up. As soon as they check yours to see that it has something wrong, they'll slap a label on the prepackaged one and send it to you. From Houston, mine went to Lubbock.
