[rQUOTEr]When reached Tuesday, however, Cuban said that he actually spoke to Jefferson about his change of heart and was not blindsided by the decision as Dallas was in Jordan's case.

"He called and talked to me," Cuban told ESPN. "RJ said he had an opportunity with an Eastern Conference team. He said he would honor what he (originally agreed to with the Mavs) but thought the other was a better fit. I told him I was OK with it and understood."[/rQUOTEr]

Is the elite recruiter going to run after the volatile J.R. Smith? There might be lots of fireworks in Cubanland, if that happens.

    Deron Williams/J.J. Barea/Ray Felton
    Wes Matthews/Devin Harris
    Chandler Parsons/Justin Anderson
    Dirk Nowitzki/Charlie Villanueva/Jeremy Evans
    Zaza Pachulia/Dwight Powell/Satnam Singh

So let's see the mavs are rolling out a starting lineup of:
Two past their prime all stars (Williams and Dirk)
    An aging journeyman (Pachulia)
An overpaid defensive specialist coming off of an ACL tear
    Chandler Parsons

    With a bench of:
Devin Harris, two scrubs (Villanueva and Felton), and a bunch of rookies.

It is going to be a fun season.

If it is a bunch of rookies, they will be undrafted rookies, which should add to your fun.

I think the Mavs have the highest spread of likely outcomes of any team in the NBA. If all the IF's work out (IF DWill gets some of his form back, IF Matthews fully recovers from ACL, IF CP recovers from microfracture and steps up with Ellis gone, etc) they could be probably a little better than they were last year. If none of the IFs work out, they could be absolutely abysmal. To probably the joy of most on this forum, if that turns out to be the case, it will also last a while, as many of those IFs have long term contracts now.

Nah, if all the "ifs" work out for the Mavs, then they could win 45 games. If some don't, like Dirk declines more or Wes doesn't recover right or the rookies aren't playing like its summer league, then the Mavs will be extremely lucky to get to 40. Would likely be in the mid 30s for win total.

Agreed with most everything, but this.

Matthews might be overpaid, but that's only because of his ACL tear, imo. He's not just a defensive specialist - it's not like he's a 0 on offense.

If all the IFs work out the Mavs will win more than 45. They've won more than that with decidedly worse teams (Collison, Mayo, etc). But, again, that is a lot of IFs to have to work out. The bottom side would indeed be somewhere in the 30's, or even lower, as they essentially be playing a second string team.

The problem with even around 50 wins is that that doesn't get you much in the West. Maybe a 7th or 8th seed, and exit in first round of playoffs. Just good enough to make it hard to get much better. Also, because of Dirk's discounted salary, its not like they are going to have this huge salary slot available when he does finally retire. $8M/yr is just an average NBA player slot, someone who should be in your playing rotation, but not much more. Maybe your seventh man. The Mavs have GOT to improve their drafting. The last couple of years, they have...but that will take time.

What's worse is that it's a ruptured Achilles instead of an ACL tear. That's a broken wheel.

The Knicks fan are pissed about losing Ndour, he's like the Black Jeremy Lin for the Knicks, who had an awesome game in the SL.

This signing is so awesome because you can LOL at the Mavs and the Knicks at the same time.

Might I add that CP looked to have MicroFracture surgey as well.

Going to be a bad defensive team.

I suggest you google that list about the NBA players who had an ACL injuries in the last 20 years and how did they perform after returning from injuries.

Matthews had an Achilles tear, so not sure what relevance that would have. A similar list of NBA players coming back from that injury, though, is not pretty. But medical techniques improve, etc. Cuban has been asked about this plenty of times, and his answer is always 'I can just go by what our doctors tell him'. I think that's a fair answer. Mavs have great doctors, and they would certainly be aware of past history with this injury. If they say it shouldn't impact things, then I think there's a fair chance it won't. Cuban clearly believes this or he wouldn't have offered anything close to that amount of money. Mavs have never really been burned by players with injuries before, just the opposite. So I suspect Matthews will recover. Exactly when is the real question. Likely not until at least the second month of the season before he plays, and probably not fully recovered until some time after that.
