as much as I want to root for a Commodore, they haven't had much success in the NBA (Will Perdue and Matt Maloney lol)

Well, after a successful combine, Taylor should move up past Wroten and Q. Miller. I'm hearing these two were terrible. Taylor at 212lbs should be able to guard even PG's more effectively.

His 6' 6.25" wingspan is a bummer, considering he is 6'6". The elite wing defenders generally have an absurd wingspans.

Translation To Next Level:

Athleticism: Taylor is an exceptional athlete who possesses a great blend of speed, quickness and spring. Has a blistering first step and accelerates very fast which is on display on every one of his drives. His quickness is great in transition and its tough to stop him with his evasiveness and body control in the open court. Doesn’t change of direction that well or change pace at a high level, but his straight-line speed off that quick burst is top tier. His vertical leap is explosive, propelling himself off the ground in an instant to rise above the competition and unleashes so much power on his dunks. He will be a superb NBA athlete that will have no difficulty fitting in on that regard.

Build: Taylor is cut from the typical NBA shooting guard/small forward cloth, which bodes well for his physical fit in the league. Has outstanding perimeter size at 6’7”, subtle length and at a cut 215 lb.s, he is physically developed and rock solid. Reportedly has a 6’6″ wingspan which would give him ‘subpar’ (not to mention negative) length relative to the rest of the league, but plays around it with his other gifts easily. Aside from that, he already possesses adequate strength and muscle on his frame, making the NBA transition that much easier. Has the ability to handle contact and finish through it at the basket at an NBA level.

Shooting: He’s not a great shooter, but he has progressively improved year by year from the perimeter during his tenure in Nashville. His midrange game is his best weapon from, as his stop and pop game is already pretty impressive. By and a large a streaky shooter who can get hot during stretches or disappear and become ineffective altogether. Coming from off ball screens, Taylor does a splendid job of having his feet squared to the basket and knees bent for a quick catch and release in rhythm, making him a respectable spot up threat. His 3-point accuracy must be respected, but he’s more accurate and comfortable shooting off the catch from long range than off the dribble. Was excellent shooting the deep ball during his senior year, cashing in on an impressive 42.3% of his 3′s on 4.3 attempts per game. This of course coming after he had shot no better than 34.5% in a single year during his college career, signaling he is still improving as a shooter and has been working hard to do so. If he attacks the rim and tries to dunk, its almost a sure thing as far finishing goes. Has shown struggles finishing around the basket if teams can force him to try and lay it on non-dunks under pressure. Was an efficient finisher in his senior season with an impressive 49.3% FG%. Does a great job of drawing fouls on drives attacking the basket and got to the free throw line 4.9 times per game as a junior.

Ball Handling: His handle is decent to get around the floor and out in transition, but you see its struggles in isolation due to a lack of moves and coordination. Doesn’t have the best change of direction nor is he very shifty. His best ‘go to’ move to create a midrange jumper is going at his defender and then using a pull back dribble for a step back jumper. Loves the driving spin move through the lane when attacking the basket and utilizes it often. At his best attacking the basket on straight-line drives because of his athleticism to finish at the basket and ability to drawing fouls. Has the ability to look his man off in triple threat and blow by them with that initial step. Does a great job of accelerating through the lane off of frequent pick and roll play and coming from off ball screens. Has a shaky handle driving when trying to go through a crowd and tends to play with a looser handle that defenders can dig at, often resulting in a turnover in his case. Despite how often he had the ball in his hands during his senior year, he cut down on his TO’s and only 12.3% of the time did he give it away.

Passing: Isn’t much of creator and playmaker in the traditional sense of turning something into nothing, as his 2.1 ast. per 40 min. on 10% of his possessions, but he runs the offense and sets up his teammates as the system dictates. Does a great job of feeding the post and lobbing the ball into the paint for his big men to go into a quick move off of. Has good timing and anticipation hitting teammates coming from off ball screens and hitting his man on heading into the paint slip screens from the pick and roll. Solid outlet passer setting up his man headed down the floor off the break from a defensive rebound. Has nice court vision, but does have a tendency to try and force some passes into the paint when he should just pass the ball back out.

Rebounding: Determined rebounder who will routinely crash the boards coming from outside the 3-point line. Not the most physical player who can bang in the paint, but has the physical strength and athleticism to come down with a rebound in a crowd. Will be a good rebounding perimeter player in the league when he wants to be with his gifts and solid motor. His numbers were down in his senior season to only 6.9 reb. per 40 minutes, but certainly has the ability to crash at a good rate when locked in, sporting a solid 10.8% rebound rate.

Defense: Taylor does a magnificent job as a perimeter defender, bothering his man by denying the ball and applying pressure at his discretion. Does his best work playing on-ball defense where he can hang with his man and contest shots. Has tremendous lateral quickness and length, regularly guarding the opposition’s quickest player in the NCAA. He’s capable of containing any perimeter player but will naturally struggle to hang with the more fleet of foot in the NBA. While he has the lateral quickness, doesn’t always have the focus and does fall asleep on defense. Sometimes defending off ball, his man will get free for an easy shot or he will give up a cutting lane to the basket without a screen because of a lapse. Does a good job of fighting over screens playing the pick and roll and loves to hedge screens defending off ball. Does a great job creating turnovers as a post doubler with those quick hands and his smart with his attempts, seldom being called for a “reach.” However, struggles as a post defender and can become mismatched but hold his ground. Isn’t the most physical defender, but does his part to dilute the opposition into a help defender or cut them off from the lane. Shows great anticipation and instincts playing in passing lanes, coming away with 1.6 steals per 40 minutes. Good ability to switch, rotate and help on defense when appropriate, fitting him into any defensive scheme almost seamlessly.

Basketball IQ: He will routinely make the smart, safe play with the ball in his hands and execute the offense as it should be. He’s an unselfish, assertive player and a “glue guy” who does everything well. Has his lapses in judgment, as seen with a slightly shaky number of turnovers trying to do more than he’s capable of, but it doesn’t kill his team. His game has matured his play during his four years, making him a “plug and play” option for any teams system, which is a big plus. Had tremendous worth to a tough Vanderbilt team with 5.2 win shares to his credit. Super efficient player who got better in almost every facet of his game during his four-year career in Nashville, even if it doesn’t show up in the stat sheet. Where it does show is in his player efficiency rating, where he had the highest of his career with a tremendous 24.2 which was among the best in the SEC. Despite being older than a good deal of his Draft peers, Jeff is still improving, showing the commitment to work and get better at an NBA level.

NBA Readiness: He could step into an NBA roster right now and make an immediate impact for any team. Played with a lot of pick and roll in the NCAA and will be able to run that at a good rate in the league, capitalizing on daylight if a lane is given to him. Also operated under heavy off ball schemes, making it a big plus that you can use him as a spot up shooter or a cutter who doesn’t need the ball in his hands. At his best with catch and shoot opportunities coming mostly from down screens up to the high perimeter and flare screens across the elbows of the lane. Is an absolute terror in transition and is a nearly unstoppable finisher with his combination of size, athleticism and build to generate power and momentum heading to the hole. Just about as NBA ready an NCAA player is for the 2012 NBA Draft, largely due to his experience and steady development all four-years at Vanderbilt.

Potential: While he will be older than most of the prospects that he will drafted amongst in 2012, Taylor still has healthy room for development during his NBA career. While impressive as a senior, there is work to be done regarding his shooting accuracy and extending his range, creating for himself off the dribble, overall ball handling ability and not turning the ball over. With his combination of athleticism, build, skill set and defensive ability, its easy to see why he would be a coveted player for a playoff team that needs perimeter help. Has a game very reminiscent of fellow European Thabo Sefolosha, but has a chance to be better. Projects as a stellar choice for a team picking the mid-late first round and could be an excellent value if he drops further.

Final Thoughts:
Taylor is a gem out of the SEC who was a first team all conference player but isn’t even talked about with the premier prospects players in the conference. He has been a solid swingman for the Commodores, but has yet to reach his full potential. He is at his best when he attacks the basket and looks to score the ball inside. Around the basket, he plays smart and is patient, using his awareness to get the best look and capitalize on the opportunity close to the basket. Jeff is an NBA ready player whose biggest contribution to a team is his defense, but he can do much more than that. He can contribute offensively for a team on by making cuts, strong drives, and getting to the free throw line, but could become a more dangerous player off the dribble in a couple years. He’s a strong rebounder that utilizes his athleticism and length to snatch boards at a good rate on the wing. Taylor will never be a star, be he can be a solid starter and impact player on the court for a team with his style of play.

I have followed Taylor for three years now. I continue to be amazed he gets so little press and attention. Honestly, as wing players go....who is better in this class? Barnes? no. Ross, close but no. Harkless...no. not yet anyway. Lamb...no. Taylor is a lock down defender. All he lacks it seems to me is a bit of intensity. Great defenders have a nasty streak and Taylor lacks that. But when all is said and done, Taylor is an elite athlete and should be a steal if taken after the the 10th pick.

These scouts must now be seeing what I am seeing. I watch college basketball every night, I have not seen a player of his caliper yet, not his season. But I also thought Dawayne Wade went too low in the draft and I was right. This guy will be off the charts in the NBA with the right team.
