On Tuesday, Oct.15, the Rockets will host the eighth annual “Clutch City Classic” - a benefit game dedicated to local charities. This season’s “Clutch City Classic” will showcase a matchup with 2002 NBA MVP Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs at Compaq Center. The “Clutch City Classic” tips off another season full of Rockets charity fundraisers and community programs. In the first seven years, proceeds from the “Clutch City Classic” have gone to Houston City Parks, the Phoenix Outreach Youth Center, Kid-Care, SEARCH, AAMA, the NAACP, Vecinos Unidos, and the Twin Towers Fund. Rockets owner Leslie Alexander’s commitment to the Houston community has translated into over $5 million in charitable contributions and countless youth programs over the last nine years. Along with Tim Duncan’s appearance, the Rockets will face two more of the NBA’s top five scorers from last season at Compaq Center this preseason. Tracy McGrady and the Orlando Magic come to Houston on Oct. 20 and 2002 NBA scoring champion Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers visit Compaq Center on Oct. 24. The Rockets will play other preseason games away from Houston vs. the Memphis Grizzlies (in Memphis), the Phoenix Suns (in Phoenix), the Portland Trail Blazers (in St. Charles, Mo.), and the San Antonio Spurs (in San Antonio).

In a rematch of the Western Conference finals, the Lakers and Kings will play on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The game will be televised by ESPN. The Heat and Timberwolves will play at the Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo on Friday, Oct. 11. It will be the 19th game organized by the NBA in Latin America since 1992; the first ever held in the Dominican Republic. The New Orleans Hornets, who relocated from Charlotte following last season, will play their first game in their new city on Oct. 17 against Washington. Chinese center Yao Ming, the No. 1 overall pick in last June's draft, should play his first game with the Houston Rockets on Oct. 15 against San Antonio. Because of commitments to his national team, Yao is expected to miss Houston's first exhibition game at Memphis on Oct. 8. The first game of the preseason takes place Oct. 6 when Utah plays Seattle at Spokane, Wash. The regular season begins Tuesday, Oct. 29.
