I disagree, and I'm a big time wine snob. I've been to the best wineries in Napa, Bordeaux and even Australia, and I think there's some quality wine and wineries in the Hill Country. I prefer the Texas white wines over the red, though. The red is a bit trickier in Texas and I don't like it as much. Try Grape Creek and Becker -- both are near Fredericksburg.
I have to admit that the majority of what we have tried has been red wines and I think they have little to be desired. I would be willing to give the whites another chance since we didn't experience many of them. In the last two to three years we have really started to gain a new appreciation for white, rose, and lighter styled reds. I went through a four to five year period where the only thing that I wanted to drink was a big, bold, full bodied red. I still love those but I am gaining a new appreciation for the more delicate wines. I am really trying hard to learn the different regions of France and Italy right now. I'm even thinking of going to Napa next year and doing a month long wine course at the Culinary Institute of America. After that course, you can take several day long courses in specific areas of the world. I find it ridiculously fascinating.
That would be amazing to take that course. If you're into that, go chat up the wine guys at Specs in Midtown. Those guys have legit knowledge of all regions of France and Italy. I can spend a long time talking to them.
