Really, you think the odds of recovering an intentionally missed free throw is 50-50? I'm going to have to call BS there. The Rockets offense will run more or less with the efficiency it did last year, i.e. 1.1 points per possession. So if you want hacking to be ineffective, all you have to do is hit 55% free throw percentage. Heck, we can even spot you a few points because I'll gladly take, say, 1.04 points per possession if I get to rack up a foul on the other team too (long term that is. Maybe still a viable defensive option for a couple of possessions) That's why hacking as a preemptive measure is highly flawed. It only has two uses - hope the guy wilts under pressure, or use it on a truly abysmal free throw shooter. Hack-a-Shaq itself was very borderline, and was best used strategically (a la Popovich) than indiscriminantly to replace playing defense.
I have long thought that the best idea for guys like Dwight on the second free throw is to chuck the ball as freakin hard as possible against the rim and crash the boards with your best rebounders, especially when you are ahead. At worst it becomes a brief melee that eats some time off the clock before someone can secure possession.
There is a decent chance that when he chucks the ball as hard as he can that he knocks someone unconscious in the stands.
Easier solution: Pay Calvin Murphy to teach him how to shoot free throws. And Asik. And the rest of the damn team. Too many Rockets games lost last year due to abysmal FT% by everyone but Harden.
Great idea! We can even hire Yao as our second consultant for our centers, this time just for free throw rebounds!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohHoK4-LeuY
I do have a bball related question??? Can a player be intentionally fouled if he remains out of bounds?? ie if Howard was in-bounding the bball and he remains out of bounds after the pass is made...
What would be the point of that? So instead of subbing Howard out, we are just going to let our other players try to play 4 on 5?
dwight got worse since being in the NBA. i think he still has the ability to get to 60% and if he can, they won't hack him.
I remember we would do that regularly in intramurals back in college, it worked about 99% because of how tall one of our guys was. But that was intramurals, where that type of silly thing works.
Didn't a hall of fame player suggest Asik shoot free throws underarm? I saw it posted here awhile back. Anyways, I don't think it would be a bad idea to try it a few times in-game situations, like in the 1st quarter.
Damn guys, Dwight was a 60% FT shooter his whole career until the last two seasons. I really don't think he'll be that bad this year. I see him working hard and getting back to 55% or better.
