Results of the poll are freaking ridiculous. Russell over Red Jordan over Phil Lebron or Duncan over Pop None are even remotely close.
LeBron over Pops under the conditions that OP suggested. But if Miami and San Antonio swapped coaches before the finals started in 2014 I think we'd have seen a different result and vastly different offensive strategies than the ones taken.
I'm with you. I do think you need the right coach for a pseudo-dynasty, but a coach needs that player to even sniff the finals. If the Cavs did a sign and trade to San Antonio, Lebron for Pop, how good would the Cavs be? Not very.
Well, the poll says Pops until he's 90, which is 24 more years, and Lebron isn't lasting that long. In that case, I go with Pops. If you ignore that part, though, it is tough. Popovich is the best coach out there and would maximize every player we have. Lebron, however, would simply ignore McHale (smart move) and run the team himself. If we're going for short-term success, you can't ignore Lebron. He'd make the other players fall in line enough to get a championship. If, however, you want to build a team with a system that's going to win many championships over time, you pick Pops, easily. Now I'd say our system, work on player improvement in bad areas, and team discipline sucks the biggest and hairiest of balls, so I'm tempted to go with Popovich. However, I'm assuming this is immediate. In that, case, I'm going with Lebron. Lebron takes over the team and uses Harden and Dwight as his subordinate assassins, who he assists when he's not scoring himself. That gets you a couple of championships, gets the team prestige, and probably better coaching in the long run.
With the Rockets current roster, gotta go with the coach. Of course there is a chance he can't stand any players on the roster and trades them all away to sign foreign players.
Great points - to recap - the Pops "system" = tank in a season where a generational talent with unparalleled longevity is available in the draft, get him to accept below market deals in the back half of his career, throw in the one-time first mover advantage on 2 other HOF players who were obtained for no value, and go from there. Sounds like a good plan! I don't see what could possibly go wrong.
Don you just mean Duncan or Lebron. Without Duncan Pops doesn't have a career. As Duncan goes, the spurs and pop will fade away and people will quit talking about how great of an organization it. Tim Duncan, the guy you don't realize how good he is even though you call him a hall of famer. He is even better then those guys. Tim Duncan, the king of kings. I feel that way about Hakeem too. In case you think I belong on a Spurs site.
Add Lebron to Howard and Harden, and teams just bend over and grab their ankles before the game even started. Howard>>>>>Bosh>Love Harden>Wade of the last 5 seasons.>Kyrie Ariza, Dmo, Tjones, Brewer, Smith is better than any bench Lebron has had in his career
Yep. Lebron literally fixes every personnel hole we have. A roster like that is good enough that any coach could make something happen. Lebron could take over point duties. He could play the 4. He could play the 3 and you could trade Ariza for an upgrade at the point or the 4. The possibilities are endless.
