Independent, leaning a little to the left and a little to the right depending on which way the wind is blowing
I would have to say that I'm basically a Republican, although I'm not registered. I will vote for the person I believe is best for the job, however, regardless of their affiliation. In the last election that included at least one Dem--the tax assessor-collector.
<strike>SoemthiI happn to be a democriat but I hahe voted for soemtprecrazy repubwingesr before (acndet). straieht iticket seems reyyt screwed up. imo.</strike> Ummm.... in the context of the thread, I believe I believe I was trying to convey a concern with voting a straight ticket.
Why typecast myself here? Anyone who's knows me personally knows which way I go politically. I WILL say I've never voted for a Bush. Uh, Nolan Ryan is for John Sharp. Is that helpful? (I voted in the poll)
I was looking at demographics the other day. Interestingly, the only group there are more Repub. than Democrats is White males. More women, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos (probably with the exception of 2nd+ generation Cuban Americans), etc are registered Demos. By education, it is the middle group (some college, completed 4 years degree) most likely Republicans. Lower education (high school or less) and highest education (physicians, lawyers, masters and PhDs) are disproportional Democrats. By income it is pretty much a strait line, higher income, more likely to register Repub. By faith, Protestants are more likely to be Repub, every other group is more likely to be Demo (Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic, etc.) Thus I can surmise the typical BBS member is a White Protestant middle to upper income male. (Of course there will always be exceptions—this all reflects trends).
Its not really very confusing. (With out rehasing Abortion discussions previously had here on this BBS... ) I'm pro life, I'd like to see every baby born... I'm pro choice, I'll fight for YOUR right to make decisions that are right for YOUR life, based upon YOUR beliefs, and situation. It's not my job (or the governments) to make decisions for others that are as life altering as having a baby or an abortion. (End of off topic discussion) I've voted for many Livertarians over the years when they seem like the most qualifed canidates, but I've also voted for Dems, Reps, Greens and Indpendents.
I'm a registered Independent. I normally vote though for who I think is the best candidate regardless of party affiliation. Here are some of my stances: 1) Pro-Life 2) For Gun Control 3) Against Rights for Gays 4) Taxes on the Wealthy (the ones in the very high bracket) So, I don't know how else to classify me except as an independent.
You might want to change how you phrase #3 unless you're against civil/human rights for gays. I doubt that's what you meant to say.
Define "special rights" and I'll tell you if I am against it or not (not trying to be an ass, just want to get more specific, but I want to answer from YOUR questions.)
Hey, Manny. I wasn't really trying to be an ass either, but I think we've already been through all this in that "What makes you gay" thread (or some other -- can't remember for sure). I really don't think you're against gays having the same rights as everyone else, so it becomes a semantics game. People who are pro-gay rights believe that gays do not currently enjoy the same rights as straights. People who are anti-gay rights believe that any legislation which seeks to bar discrimination against gays constitutes "special rights." It's a semantic argument which plays better with the average voter than pro-gay, anti-gay stuff. It allows one to say, "Hey, I don't have a problem with gays -- I just don't think they should have 'special' rights." And the other side says, "What's special about wanting the same rights everyone else has?" Anyone seeking a more meaningful discussion of this issue can find it in that other thread.
Batman, You are right. I guessed I asked you to define "special rights" for others who were not involved in our discussion of this in the past. I think you sorta summed up my view and your view pretty well. I am trying to do better at understanding this, but it is still very hard. I will say that I am not discussing it any further...for now.
