What's the common denominator?

 

Discrimination against blacks vs. discrimination against the indigent -- I'd say there's a lot of similarities. But, I disagree that they are doing it outside of the law. Doing it outside of the law would be to do it on the sly and evade the police. They did it out in the open so that they could be charged. Now, they'll go their the court system to adjudicate it. That is working within the system. Legislation is only one part of it.

You know Houston has a similar ordinance, right? Fort Lauderdale's says you can't do it in public, so presumably churches and charities that want to feed the homeless can still bring them onto private property somewhere. In Houston, you have to get permission from the city in advance to feed the homeless in public (though they do have a system established for obtaining that permission).

The argument in Houston is that the feeding operations create negative externalities like litter. I assume in Ft. Lauderdale they have the additional concern of impacting their tourism industry.

These pastors are presumably devout in their Christianity. Obeying the Biblical directives to feed the hungry is probably higher on their priority list than some ordinance. And, we have a lot of those types around.

As long as it's non-violent, I have zero problem with someone disobeying a law that disregards human dignity.

 

I dont see how a law can be created to prevent me from giving something I own to another hunan being ... I dont see how a law like that can be legal as the Govt should have no right to tell you what you can give away or where you can or cannot do it
