What about the boardwalk? Those waves during Ike were unreal, and it started long before the storm hit. Hoping it's reinforced for that. I don't plan on visiting it until I have a child, but I also think it's great for Galveston. Now if we could just get some Casinos!
It's probably made to withstand hurricanes but any pier built that close to the water has the chance to get destroyed. Hurricanes are just too unpredictable. It's a great idea and a great way to add some fun to galveston, just hope nothing destroys it. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5deSN38O0q0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Looks nice.
I'd love to see who insures a $60M investment floating over water In a hurricane zone....nonetheless very cool
Deckard is absolutely on the money with respect to Tilman's desecration of everything he touches. Kemah was once engagingly funky. Now it's a mecca for stupid suburban diabetics and Rascal captains. The good news though is that these types of places tend to attract and contain an unsavory element and thus remove them from interfering with whatever I might be doing. The same thought struck me about the Clear Lake area the last time I was down there, that if I had to live in Houston I might very well consider living there. Fortunately I don't, but there is something oddly appealing about the area.
Probably Lloyd's of London; they have billions in assets and insure like half the risks in the world.
traffic coming here on the island is nuts. moved to the island after ike and i've never seen the causeway as jam packed as it was today. going in the opposite direction, i noticed it started getting bumper to bumper around lamarque. galveston is definitely back.
Yea, I'm up in Houston this weekend and I have no interest in returning to my apartment on the island until late late tonight (10pm+) because of all the traffic.
I think it looks really cool personally even though it's not something I'll enjoy at this stage in my life. More of those types of things would be good for both Galveston and Houston. I know these types of things are too cliche for all the hipster crowd, but the Houston area (down to Galveston) really does lack in traditional entertainment stuff. Have places like Malibu died out all over the country or is it just Houston?
Has anyone gone the past 2 days? I wanna take my gf tomorrow but need to know if all the rides are working. If not, I'll just take her to Kemah.
I don't think it fully opens until Friday. Last week was a sneak peak from what I read. I'm wrong like 99% of the time though. My wife tells me this.
I guess the traffic at a standstill there last weeken were due to all those people who made wrong turns trying to get to Austin?
Come on man. This pier is a good start, but legalized gambling would attract people from various parts of the state, and generate some much needed revenue. Once the luster wears off this thing, it's going to be more steady as she goes. Put a Harrah's right there next to this pier, and people would have a reason to come back. Right now, you've gotta go all the way to like Lake Charles just to play some damn craps.
