If you're into vietnamese food, check out Pho Tau Bay. We went after seeing chefs rave about it on TV (Emeril Lagasse, Anthony Bourdain, John Besh) and it delivered. Steaming bowls of pho may just be the best hangover food ever. As far as fancy, just get on Yelp and find something that sounds good. We really liked Cochon. I'll probably pop for Commander's Palace next time we go back.
For a nicer place definitely hit up Commander's. Other than great food it has a lot of history and atmosphere is pretty cool. It's less pricey if you go for brunch but the menu is a little more limited but some of their staples are still available.
Just got back in town. New Orleans was a blast, thanks for all the recommendations. Tried to go to as many places as we could. Ate at Mother's, Mr B's Bistro, Commander's Palace, and Jacque Imo's. Visited Jackson Square, Dday musuem, live music and plenty of shops. Casino, bars, and t*** of course. Was a lot of fun, was bitterly cold the first night but overall an excellent time.
Going with the Fam to Nola for Thanksgiving. Don't have family there , more of a family trip during the holidays.
Be prepared for big crowds in Nola Thanksgiving weekend. The Bayou Classic football game between Grambling St and Southern University will bring lots of people to the city.
How is New Orleans the week after Thanksgiving/first week of December? Have things calmed down by then in terms of crowds?
Seems like an appropriate thread: if any of yall like to cook, this is by far the best NO cookbook I've found. My mom bought it there in the 70's?, this cover, but there's a newer edition out. It's my go-to for gumbo/etoufee/jambalaya/etc.... They're cheap on Amazon, since it's Christmas season and all. FYI.
