    $5M+ a year, eh?

That's like a fortune if you're the Pirates.

Admittedly, I don't know much about Barmes. On paper he seems like a marginal upgrade to Ronny Cedeno. Am I wrong, Stros fans?

You know the Houston Astros are in a bad state financially when they can't afford a player who ultimately leaves to get his money from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

i think this was more about valuing the compensatory pick over the player.

Ahem, your first place Pittsburgh Pirates up until Jerry Meals ruined our season in Atlanta. ;)

Marginal defensive upgrade to the Cedeno of last year. He makes about the same number of outs. His OBP the last 2 years has been .305 and .312.

Hopefully, the Bucs get more out of this $5M than they got out of the $5M they gave Lyle Overpaid last year.

Yay!! A different guy to bat 8th!!!

    Hey now, that's McKenry's spot!

Between Cedeno, McKenry and whichever pitcher batting 9th, the bottom of our order had to have been one of the least productive in all of baseball.

Bucs aren't moving.... That and Barmes was ridiculous batting 5th to 7th last year.

Barmes was solid. He wasn't an all-star but he seemed to be something that was a prospect that was turning into a solid player. What's the point of getting cheap guys, or developing guys if we can't keep them once they are even at the Barmes level?

Barmes was no prospect. Dude is already past his prime. Great with the leather, but just substandard veteran fill-in fodder. Good call not to pay the guy $5MM.

He wasn't an Astros prospect, but he was somebody that developed later. I thought he was a player that was just hitting his stride.

I knew he was older, but I didn't remember him having a better year than last season. I thought he was just coming into his own as a player.

Wow, I never realized. It's not like he was ever someone who grabbed my attention and made me focus on him, so it was just the odd boxscore or highlight that I'd ever really noticed him before.

I guess I just paid more attention when he was with the Astros.

We got an extra draft pick. That means the trade for Barmes was a successful one, and not trading him at the deadline wasn't necessarily a mistake.
