On the Cowherd show today Brad Daugherty couldn't believe the free throw disparity and said that if the calls were even the Clippers would have won. he didn't specifically mention any bad calls.
ya, and apparently you can't play d straight up and down or block Blake's shot because that's a foul. Doesn't matter if he bulls his way in then extends his arm to create seperation, because that's a foul on the Rockets.
Great analysis. I did a different analysis to get some more clarity on this, but I think you definitely put in more work by watching each foul again. I took the statistician way . . . which isn't as accurate depending on how they classify personal/shooting fouls. Basic conclusions: The spread in fouls really came in the late 3rd and early 4th quarters The spread in free throws started a little earlier than that. The difference came in personal fouls that resulted in 2 shots (typically hack-a-player type fouls) The Rockets don't seem to do hack fouls more than 2 or 3 in a row (maybe Doc pulls out DeAndre when it starts) while the Clippers have a few strings of 4-5.
The rules are really a collective loose interpretation.... No need to think too hard brother, just let it happen.
I hope the league and referees are rational enough to go back and review the game tape rather than listen to over-simplified reactions. People should be laughing that the Clippers would intentionally foul so much and then assign that as the reason they lost the game... but instead people are anchored on the nebulous idea that the Rockets "get too many free-throws".
Didn't see it posted yet so I went ahead and posted it on reddit. http://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/35agz4/an_in_depth_look_at_the_ft_disparity_in_game_2_of/
It's just the losual from the media, no attention for anything good the Rockets do, play that down, and focus on anything that might slight them. Yesterday Cavs get 8 minutes on Sportscenter for evening up their series, Rockets got less than 2. Cavs got two plays on top ten, none of which were as good as the top 5 in our game two, and we got none. Oh wait, did they show Griffin's oop? If so, figures. Best to just deal with it because it's nothing new, and it isn't going to change any time soon, for whatever reason. When we win it will be that much sweeter, even if no one hears about it. It IS frustrating that what little attention we are getting is chock full o' that which implies we should be judged more harshly by the referees.
Great work. I knew that was a pretty well called game sitting from my vantage point. My only concern: If we push this series, do we become the '01 Sacramento Kings in the eyes of the league? ESPN is no doubt slobbering at the thought of an LA v GS wcf
One thing for sure, it's not going to help Harden's game. All the contact and none of the calls, just because they've abused putting us on the line as a strategy... as if that isn't already hard(en) enough in the playoffs.
Nobody gave a ish when the Rockets shot 53 FTs vs the Spurs(24 FTA) b/c they LOST...And in that game Josh Smith shot a career high 26 FTA, making 12. If the Rockets managed to lose the game vs the Clippers, would they even give a crap? Frankly no!!! Since they lost, they can easily point to the one thing that was artificially inflated: Foul Shots!!! That wont matter, the Rockets shooters were missing wide open looks. I expect this to improve for game 3. Harden, Ariza, Brewer and Jason Terry were really bleh shooting from deep. They have successfully pulled off the first two games by packing the paint essentially daring the Rockets to make shots from distance: Primarily the mid range shots. If the Rockets start connecting, the Clippers are going to have to adjust...and the paint will slowly open up.
I e-mailed Sam Linneroth at the NBA office, he's the guy that responded to my e-mail about the hacking situation. "Hi again Mr. Linneroth, Game 2 of the Western Conference Semi-finals between the Rockets vs. Clippers has left many wondering if the Clippers received a "fair shot" at the game considering the Rockets attempted twice as many free throws. As it turns out, a user on Clutchfans.net posted every foul that the Clippers committed to break down how they got so many fouls. Please visit the forum thread for further review. Thank you. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=265370"
Then Brad Daugherty has made it his mission to make the free throw disparity look as if the Clippers got Hosed? It's either he didn't watch the whole game or he's just a bias LA fan. Doc River even said the Rockets were the aggressors and they put them on the line a lot.....its because the Clippers watched the game tape and saw it for themselves. If it was suspect they would take the opportunity to call out the refs for their advantage

ESPN is r****ded. Either they don't care about facts or they know the truth and still just spread this **** around. I think the second one is worse. You know ****ing well that the clippers play the hack a whoever game. Kornheiser is acting like this is the biggest disgrace in the history of basketball. Just so stupid.
This really is a media thing. I watched the post game press conference in full, and while Doc did say for effect "117" free throws or something like that, he immediately followed that up with talking about how the intentional fouling probably made it look worse than what really happened. I watched ESPN following the post game, and they spliced the clip of that quote exactly before Doc mentioned the intentional fouling. The only person who complained a bit more was Blake at the podium, and that was only at the prodding of an LAC reporter, and Blake didn't say much other than imply favoritism bc he didn't want to get fined. News flash: Blake complains a lot. Honestly, most of the post-game was subdued. There were many things Doc and his players talked about that could have changed, but ESPN really wanted to harp on the FT record, which we all know was mostly due to intentional hacking, late-game hacking, and not-giving-up layups hacking (mostly to Howard).
