The mistake was giving up a lottery pick

Just a FYI: The NOP team D is still ranked top 5 worst with a DefRtg of 105.3, but Asik's numbers have improved since 12/29/14/.

    Asik 102.0 107.1 -5.1
    Davis 107.3 105.4 +1.9
    Team 106.0 106.9 -0.9

    OffRtg DefRtg NetRtg
    Asik 102.9 103.8 -0.9
    Davis 107.8 103.3 +4.5

I am pretty sure they gave up a lotto pick for a 1 yr rental of a 15m big man all in the hopes of coming 9th....

They need a new coach before anything can really be evaluated fairly imo.

You seriously overrate the no 13 pick. Since davis went down asik is averaging 11-13 and the pelicans have won 5 in a row.

Agreed that Asik is worth a mid 1st rounder. This board is underrating Asik because of his pouting after we got Howard.

I'd take that 13th pick all day.

Asik is better than most of those guys with a few exceptions.

Lot of really solid NBA players on that list. The biggest problem is given up the lottery pick for a one year rental on a team that had no realistic shot at being a factor this year. They should be collecting talent to put around Davis instead of given up the future to be average right now.

For sure, I bolded Kobe's name to be specific, but it definitely is very hit or miss on that. I doubt Asik would have resigned with us anyway.

Good catch on Karl Malone, I got so caught up on Kobe's name that I missed that teenage impregnating player's name.

Kevin Looney has superstar potential. Could be interesting if he's there if we still have the pick.

Is 1 season of Asik worth a late lottery pick?

It isn't likely that the Pelicans make the playoffs and it is also unlikely that Asik gives any real discount to the Pelicans, that could be looking at losing Asik or giving up a 4-5 year deal in the 13-15 million a season.

In my opinion the answer is "no", but I every situation is unique.

I am mostly interested in seeing what the Rockets do with the pick... is it dealt for an existing player? Is it dealt for future picks (my best guess) or do the Rockets draft another young player.

Just another example of how fans might think they know more than the front office. You know, the ones who are paid to evaluate value.

Yea. . . but sometimes you get luck
Throw up al lthe 14th, 15th, 16, etc picks too
Is Asik better than all them too?

Just seems people may miss at 13 more often than not
does not mean that GOOD TALENT is not available at that spot

A lot of those guys were picked by bad drafters, since those guys aren't the ones drafting for the Rox what's the point of using them for comparison? For example the chances of a 2nd rounder becoming a serviceable rotation player is quite low if you look at ot historically, but in the Rox's case the 2nd rounder has yielded good results from Landry all the way to Parsons.

Morey has done a great job at drafting outside of Royce White Morey has been able to get useful players at all positions from late lottery to low 2nd rounder. If we keep the pick I am confident we can get a good player out of it....at least better than the ones on that list.

An argument could be made that (though with a huge amount of hindsight), keeping Asik this season would have been enormous for the Rockets. Given the Dwight uncertainty, and Smith and Brewer potentially departing this offseason, having Asik as a quality backup center would help a ton for a title run.

Having said that...trading him for the pick was the right move at the time.

No it isn't worth it because they are also going to have to extend Asik at an even higher amount just because he's a center and future cap rises.

Morey picked Jeremy Lamb at #12. You think Lamb is better than Asik? Morey is good at picking in the 2nd round. But he has not shown that he is any better than other GMs at picking in the 1st round.

The point is, the value of draft picks is viewed differently than that of real players. Picks are CHANCES. You don't know what you will get. It's a probability. So you look at the history to see the probability of getting a certain level of player with a certain position at the draft.

If you have the #1 pick at a draft, you still don't know what you will get. You list out all the #1 picks in history and there are busts and there are superstars. You don't just look at the busts and say that #1 picks aren't worth anything. You look at the chances of landing a superstar against the chances of getting a lemon. When evaluating probability, you use a large sample size rather than focusing on the outliers.
