I don't buy it. They could have said something and they couldn't have made a half ass attempt to play. Not that anyone would have noticed any different.
And it's awesome that after one play through, Paul and the band was able to recreate their simple ass song so easily.

What's the controversy? Looked like a good ending to the show. I doubt Letterman and co are mad.

That makes a lot more sense, and it does look like he did it on purpose, so there ya go. Now, if they knew they were supposed to play more then that makes it weird again, but still the drummer and rhythm guitar guy seemed game. so maybe he knew and was just caught up in it.

Who knows, but no one was insulting about it or anything, Scaffer just having fun with it... but Late Show band did kill it at the drop of a hat. Of course, that's what they do.

I don't know how many strings dude broke, but I still say if he had any left at all, and Paul and Dave tell you they wanna hear your song again, you play whatever ya got and give it hell, after at the most sayin "Well, here it is on 2 strings" or whatever....

Maybe he broke them on purpose because they don't like Dave and Paul's corrupt absolute power controlling them.

That's pretty funny. Impressive by the late show band.

Still could of done something without the guitarist, but if they suck maybe they can't

What a lame and super pretentious performance, even w/out the ending.

I read Letterman rarely asks for full on encores, but I remember catching this when it aired. This band would kick Orwell's ass and still showed some respect to a comedy icon.

Paul Shaffer is a living legend when it comes to live performances, and musical directing. He probably has more musical talent in his little finger than that entire band of ass-clowns.

I didn't know Paul's house band playing out the guest's music was even a thing.

then what are you trying to explain?

are you saying guest bands play their own song as an encore? I didn't know that was a thing either.

yes, from time to time, a brief extension of their own song....probably dependent on if the show ran short and there's some air to fill. professor jay posted an example. i could probably find you countless more.

well that's why I prefer to watch Jimmy Fallon with the Roots.

better guest bands and interactive play between the guests and the house band.

You can actually skip to the end of YouTube videos -- you don't have to watch the whole thing.
    _____

When your garage band somehow gets booked on Letterman with just an EP release (not a full album) -- you do whatever is asked of you up to and including sexual favors.

We know that we'll never be better than
    Mister Slick Superstar, David Letterman
I promise, we'll be perfect gentlemen
Just put us on the show, you'll regret us then

I was waiting for Letterman to ask whose drums those were.
