Bias against big men? Or maybe he's just not coaching material.

But how bad can he be compared to our own big-man coach?

How many former NBA PF/C head coaches are there in the league?

Is McHale the only one right now?

Ewing deserves to be a coach for some team in the NBA. His really had to earn it compared to the other current coaches

Maybe one day Ewing will coach the Knicks while Dream coaches the Rockets... then we meet in the finals.

Ewing has long wanted to go back to the Knicks - for whatever reason they won't take him.

I noticed that too- maybe it's because big men (at least traditionally) don't have to manage the game the same way a point guard or even a swingman might?

It would explain why McHale can't develop a play or offensive strategy to save his life. He was known for being a big bruiser, not exactly a role that requires a high basketball IQ, whereas a guy like Steve Nash is being tasked with managing the whole court.

A coach that is taller than most of his players puts them in line. Too bad that's not the case for McHale..

Based on what? Just being an assistant for a long time does not mean you deserve to be a head coach. Perhaps he continually demonstrates in those jobs that he has excellent assistant coach skills but he doesn't have the skills people look for in a head coach. The last thing you want is a Peter Principle promotion.

And Ralph Sampson would love to coach the Rockets. And Kareem would love to coach the Lakers.

I'm totally basing it on his resume credentials (which is at face value) compared to the other coaches that is currently active.

Their could be some underlying lack of skills, or some personality trait that does not fit as being a coach...but i guess we won't know that unless he becomes a coach or we're next to him observing.

It's true, Bill Laimbeer & Kevin McHale have proven big men coaches are only suited for the WNBA.

McHale is tall but not exactly a bruiser as a player. He used his length and am elite array of post moves to score around the rim and used his long arms and footwork to be a top defender.

I think that, more than being a big man, McHale's playing career as an elite player has more of an effect on how he handles the coaching job.

Many of the most talented players don't exactly think too much about or even follow game plans. Jack McCallum wrote a book about the 1990-91 Celtics and noted that both Bird and McHale would freelance quite a bit rather than execute the game plan exactly. When Bird got older and injured, there was murmur among the fanbase about how his freelancing and ball-stopping, now less effective in a less mobile body, was hurting the team.

Perhaps this makes McHale, for better or worse, more tolerant of some of Harden's ball-stopping ways and trusting of his players to figure things out on their own compared to coaches who stayed in the NBA as players only by following the coach's exact orders.

Hakeem is better than a coach, he's a highly paid consultant who works when he wants.

have you guys heard him talk or do interviews? he is the worst...he can't do an interview with saying "you know, you know, you know" 1000 times. don't really think he has a good communication skill. he can't talk right....just listen to his speech at his jersey retirement ceremony....wow, just horrible and he will make you dizzy cuz he won't stand still and keeps rocking back and forth.
