I thought about all your hypotheticals and found my opinion doesn't change at all. Depending on the circumstance, I may find I think the parents are terrible people, but I still see no grounds where an adult child has any claim on their money. She does say they're abusive and contributed to her eating disorder. Maybe she's totally justified in not wanting to live in their house. And that's totally fine since she's an adult, and she can go and live as she pleases. But, she still can't put claims on their money.

She is 18 so none of those things matter really. Her parents can be completely racist, homophobic, etc, but once she is 18 they don't have to pay for her anymore. Just think if professional athletes had to pay for kids they had after they reached 18, ouch.

She is sueing her parents on something she shouldn't win. Do you think an employer would hire her now?

My graphic was for ALL teenagers, but... to answer your question: yes, probably one that hasn't heard of the case or that interviews her fair and square. The case shouldn't have to do anything with her chances of getting a job.

Maybe she can try to get a job at:

My perception doesn't change. Once you're 18, all bets are off.

Vandoley Ind...sorry not hiring at the moment (...that you're here...)

But yeah I can see where the "gentlemans clubs" would be fighting to get her in.

I guess she's really narrowed down her job choices between those that won't know her as the girl that sued her parents and strip clubs. Though if this drags out she can probably strike a TV deal.

She is so close to college at this point that she would only have to live at home...what...less than a year? She's basically giving up her financial support to be with her boyfriend. But, once she goes away to college, she can do what she wants. Your parents have no control over what you do at college. She just needs to make the grades. Move back home, play by their rules for less than a year, and go away to college like you'll made up. Then, date whomever you want and party it up...but keep those grades up and pretend you are being a goody two shoes to Mom and Dad.

Yeah, teenagers are dumb. She can humble herself for 6 months, get a high school degree, get her tuition paid for college, drive her car, and soon be free to make all the dumb decisions she's dying to make. Or, she can be stubborn, miss graduation, lose her scholarships, have no way to pay for college, make herself a national pariah, stick with her loser boyfriend, live with her friend's creepy dad, and strip or hook to make ends meet. But, with the latter, she'll get an education on the judicial system she would not have gotten going the safe way.

(Ok, I don't know she'd lose scholarships, but missing graduation must complicate things. And, I don't know that her boyfriend is a loser, but there must be some reason the parents object. I don't know that the friend's father is creepy, but it is pretty strange he'd pay some other lawyer to handle her case, which obviously has no merit, unless he was getting payments in kind. And, I don't know that she has no way to pay for college, considering that her friend's creepy dad has put up $13k for a doomed lawsuit.)

Not if she can get a co-signer for her loans, like every other student in history.

It will still cost her a minimum of $128K to attend a non-top tier university

Yes, but the kind of people who can afford that will probably make for a decent network down the road. Lots of schools like that have been around for years, they wouldn't be able to charge that much otherwise.

Federally subsidized student loans don't need cosigners. She's like any other college-bound kid going to a school I've never heard of. If she leaves with $130k in debt, that's only... good God! $1,464 per month! If she instead went to Montclair State University, which is ranked slightly better, she could pay in-state tuition and fees of $11,200. Even with no scholarship and borrowing also to pay room and board, she could probably come out with only $70k of debt and pay $750/month. But, she doesn't really seem like a forward-thinking person.
