    My fellow CFers

I am overweight and have finally taken responsibility for my actions. I am trying to get on a better diet and plan to workout atleast 3 days a week but am aiming for 5 days a week.

    My plans include:

    -Little to none fast food
-Little to none soda (diet, reg, 10 cal, etc)
-Little to none energy drinks (red bulls, monsters, etc)
-Working out cardio/major muscle groups in a routine like fashion
-Steering away from stress (my major cause for overeating)
    -Playing Basketball!!!!

I hope to have other CFers who would like to join in a support system come in and share their experiences and lean on whoever else is here for support!

Consistency in workout and diet is key. Especially in diet.

If you just change your diet you won't even really need to hit the gym unless you want to get ripped. I would first lose the extra weight, and then try to get toned at the gym later on.

Just reduce carbs (bread) and sugar intake (soda, candy, sweets) and you'll see pretty good results.

Just some advice, implement your plan in stages. If you try to do all of that at the same time it is likely you will burnout and revert pretty quickly. So I would keep your list as is and just begin exercising for several weeks. Then slowly once you have adjusted to the exercise and any soreness, you cut out soda and then later cut out fast food and so on gradually. Don't let a bad day discourage you. Everyone has them, what matters most is what you do the next day. Also highly recommend getting a trainer to start out. It's a big help and well worth the money. The trainer will put you in a good program and will show you how to maximize your workouts, will show you good form (the importance of form), and will motivate you in those early days when you're struggling. Best of luck.

he will burn fat a whole faster by lifting and eating healthy together. he doesn't even have to resort to an extreme diet if he is lifting. as a matter of fact, an extreme change in diet in an effort to lose weight is not the best method. that's why you see so many people gain the weight back. lift weights to build muscle to burn off the fat.

That is true. But I believe that most overweight people don't have the capacity to do both (to exercise and eat healthy). They will work out and then feel tired and then eat poorly to compensate for their new found strenuous workouts. Or they will feel like rewarding themselves due to running a mile on the treadmill.

Basically, I would tell those folks to stick to just to diet since they won't feel exhausted after a workout. Many people overeat when they are tired.

It is too drastic of change to expect overweight folks to make such a big decision as in committing to workout and eat healthy. Baby steps first.

I don't think that's the case, particularly long term. Burning calories makes you lose fat, doesn't matter if its circuit training or running. The more muscle you have the more calories you can burn. I don't think weight loss is the term people are really looking at, it's fat loss. Obviously being 6 foot 200 pounds and 10% body fat isn't the same as 6 foot 200 pounds with 20% body fat.

Good luck buddy! I'm sure you can do it!

I'm trying to lose weight too, so any info would be awesome!

I've started running and playing basketball/soccer. I'm trying to get in a habit of smoothies breakfast, heavier lunch, and light dinner. I'm trying to avoid meat but that's been the most difficult part for me. What kinds of food is a must avoid?

this is why i try to avoid threads like this.

    such bull**** advice.
exactly! i bet he is doing so many obvious things "wrong" with his current eating habits that he can easily reverse.

and how many lbs of muscle do u think he is going to gaining? and how much effect does it have on his daily calorie needs?

apparently an extra lb of muscle burns like 5 cals PER DAY!...not very significant. and good luck trying to put on 20lbs of muscle when he is learning to lose fat.

Definitely don't avoid meat. If you avoid anything make it be sugar and bread.

Cutting out sugary drinks will save you a ton of calories. I used to drink soda a ton as a kid and now I hardly drink any.

I would also recommend to count your calorie intake. I think just the simple exercise of doing that will help you recognize when you are eating too many calories and help you adjust your diet. Also, try to eat more often during the day with smaller portions and just eat something for breakfast.

Also, you don't need to work out 5 days a week if you are on a good diet. Don't burn yourself out. Maybe start out at 2-3 days a week and build up from there. The other days during the week just make sure to walk and take the stairs whenever you can.

If you "fall off the wagon" don't beat yourself up. Just keep your goals in mind and keep working towards them and you will succeed.

^ I agree. If you must have a 'flavor' in a drink, don't drink sodas, but buy the flavor small packs from Crystal Light or the generic kind (H.E.B. has passion fruit, cherry, etc.) and put them in regular 16.9 oz. water bottles.

I recommend against the myfitfoods (or the like) thing.

They are conducive enough to help weight-loss, but, aside from being a ripoff - they are a crutch. Not only that, you'll be going to other restaurants saying to yourself "well, i got such and such at myfitfoods...this is similar enough to that". and will gradually be getting yourself offtrack.

Learn to cook your own healthy food. You aren't going to be able to pick up meals from myfitfoods for the rest of your life. Make cooking most of your meals part of your lifestyle change. If your fridge and freezer isn't transformed to like 80%+ fruits and veggies, any weight loss will more than likely not be sustainable.

start with changing your diet (start by cutting sugar, then other carbs)

Cardio and lifting are great eventually for overall health, but they will cause you to work up an appetite and make it harder to lose weight. .
