Omer has put up some really good numbers for the Rockets, coming off of back-up duties for the Bulls in his previous two years. He averages 10.4 ppg, 11.6 rpg (2nd overall), 1.1 BPG, and suprisingly less than 3 fouls. On defense he has been the reason the Rockets have had even a hope and a prayer in staying in games. When he is in the game, HOU D performs at top-12 rate & No. 1 on Defensive glass. When Omer sits, the Houston D is bottom-2, bottom-10 on D. glass. So, we know he is the Rockets defensive MVP. How does he stack up against the rest of the league?
It's gonna be hard. Marc Gasol and Noah are clearly better. Ibaka and Tyson Chandler will get more votes than Asik as well.
yeah, also he averages lower minutes than all of those guys..that probably hurts him as well. I think he has a good shot at 2nd team
Style of play is a huge factor, and playing for one of the worst defenses in the league isn't going to garner many accolades on that side of the ball.
true..but impact to team is obviously there..a top 12 defensive team when he's in is telling. Although that probably speaks more highly to his value to the Rockets in general.
Yeah, the defensive and rebounding splits with him on/off court are his best argument. Maybe if we creep up and get the sixth seed he will get more recognition. I think in the playoffs we're gonna see people fall in love with Asik's beastliness and Parsons... everything. If we make it of course. The NBA voters are usually a year late in seeing amazingness especially on the defensive end.
The thing is, his defensive production has been hurt quite a bit by the high pace we play at. He's amazing at defending against a slow half court game, but the Rockets turn every game into a running game. So I'm not sure his actual defensive production has been all NBA first team level as a result. Plug him into a slower paced team as a starter, I think it would be.
Dwight (even this year), Noah, Gasol, Garnett, and Duncan are the only bigs better defensively IMO, and only 3 of those are officially centers.
I agree with that. He has adapted his game to the fast pace pretty remarkably though...he was a better shot blocker with the bulls and part of that (might be) that he had more time to set and read the opposing teams offense. When on the fly, he has to just react and be the big body in the paint. Makes one wonder how effective Dwight's Defense would be on the run & gun rockets.
