Hakeem isn't the only big (center/pf) that would thrive today. David Robinson is basically a much better version of Davis. Much better defender and had more of a back-to-basket game. 2-3 inches taller too and just as (if not more) athletic. He's a much better rebounder. Ewing could hit 18' jumpers on the regular and would be the 2nd best interior defender behind Whiteside in today's game. Karl Malone and Barkley would be the best interior scorers in today's game and both players have 18-20' range. There's maybe 2 current players that are better rebounders than them.
This. Also, what happened to Clint just wanting to always put everyone through the rim? He's been going up with a lot of soft layups lately.
When Flops are rewarded every time Grabbing and holding is not called Defensive 3 seconds in the lane is never called The reffing as moved the game outside Rocket River
You don't argue with the greatest center of all time. Hakeem would destroy any of today's undersized players at his current age; just not for many minutes. All he's saying is that, if you're not a blockhead, you can use the post like a Swiss Army knife, and he's right. A good and intelligent post player can be pretty similar to an intelligent point guard, just from an inside-out versus an outside-in perspective. Hakeem had tons of assists for a big man, and the only reason he doesn't have way more is that was a nigh-unguardable scorer as well. The reason Dwight won't ever achieve that is that he's doesn't have the brain for it. He may be extremely athletically gifted, but he's not going to be passing out to open men like Hakeem was describing. That's why he shouldn't post, because he's not a Swiss Army knife. He's more like a butter knife that always attacks the same way. It's pretty easy to predict and avoid, and on the rare occasion the move does find purchase, it probably won't hurt. Dwight should exclusively be a dagger-in-the-back type where the kill is set up by someone else.
Start DMo have him be the low post threat and watch this team explode. Dmo starts for Capella - and they will take off. DD
I've seen those so many times, and I still just watched them both back to back like 20 times each just now...
Mozgov took the Warriors to school one game in the Finals. He just panicked when they double teamed. Put a quality low post player, and a strong overall unit and GSW is taken. No team has a very good back to the basket big man AND a cooperative team. Spurs are closest.
olajuwon lashing out at his student, dwight? stay tuned. I miss the post game in the city of houston. Dream, Yao, luis.
I'm starting to think it might be a mass/weight thing as well as the **** rules in the post in today's game. Alot of 6'11+ guys are sensitive about their weight and are listed by much less. Don't think they can ballerina around the post as gracefully as Hakeem. Shaq's moves are today's offensive fouls in the post so that doesn't count.
I think no matter how hard some guys try they will never be good post players. Just comes down to coordination and feetwork, which a lot of dudes that size just don't have naturally.
That is part of the problem Then you add that breathing on a driving guard is a defensive foul Like someone said They have actively taken the Big Man out of the game The issue is everyone is trying to be Jordan . . .even at 6'11 No one seems to want to learn big man skills Rocket River
let the truth be told! i really miss the big man era. i've always thought bball is a game of big men and a game of shooting. now we only have less than one half of the beauty left. while having completely commercialized and globalized the game, stern also ruined it to a large degree. for that i hate him, with a passion.
btw, great thread, tinman. hats off to you. while all the crazy leaping, dribbling and 3pt shooting are indeed amazing, i have really grown tired of seeing only those all year around. outside of tim duncan, i believe yao was the last true big man who showed some brilliance in the post and he was, to a large degree, a sacrifice of what mr. stern wanted to do at the time. damn...
