fwiw: They don't murder the patsy. They find a hopeless and suicidal addict or alcoholic and promise to set up his family for life with money. The patsy doesn't need much to finally act on his preexisting suicidal tendencies -- especially when one way gives him delusional hope that he's doing something good for his family. They can also soak the interior with more accelerant. If it fails, and the guy survives or is recognizable, then it's just a case of someone stole his car.

Then they block any DNA testing by bribing the coroner.

How's that for How to Fake Your Death 101

Couldn't they also just go get a John Doe dead guy from the morgue and switch his dental records, like how House faked his own death?

Doesn't seem very far fetched for a billionaire to be able to pull off.

Yeah, my Fake Death 101 idea is easier, imo. hehe

Most important thing is to make the crime scene look real. I would think you have to drive that car full-speed into the wall. Car must be smashed. A dead person can't do that. Did you see the crime scene photos? There were tire tracks in the grass from many feet before the wall, and treads on the road.

Then yeah, like you say, falsify records.

Nothing personal, but I'm always perplexed how quick people are to write a conspiracy theory. Is the story of "rich douchebag gets caught and explodes himself" so boring that it needs a rewrite?

I was under the impression that if he died before exhausting his appeal process, than his conviction is vacated automatically and as a result in the eye of the law he is completely not-guilty & no fine can be levied against his family due to his crime (likely a substantial amount of $$$)

The same thing happened to Kenneth Lay (Enron chairman). He was convicted & the government was ready to seize $43 million from his family. But before the government was able to seize his $$, he conveniently died from a heart attack and as a result his conviction was vacated & his family got to keep the $43 million.
