So you're cool with this huh?

I remember you saying if there was a case where a officer was in the wrong you'd speak against it. Still waiting for that.

Yet here you are once again wanting to shove it to the side. You're completely fine with cops 'inconveniencing' people for whatever reason they wish. Fine with 12 year olds being killed by a cop. You're also cool with the mentally ill being mistreated.

You truly believe that officers are these infallible entities who can do no wrong.

The ONE thing you're not cool with is people calling out things based on race. That's the one thing that you will rush to speak out against.

As someone who has been pulled over as a "suspicious person" on more than one occasion and a "burnt out taillight" that still worked on a few others, sure. It's annoying when it happens, but if you aren't doing anything wrong, it's just a mild inconvenience.

I know people like you see it as the man oppressing you, but that's pretty ridiculous.

Again the truth lies somewhere in between

It was idiotic of the black dude to make prolonged eye contact and it idiotic of the cop to pull him over for that reason. That's the problem. Too many idiots in Murica

I love how Bobby's name was invoked and he appears two minutes later. Like summoning the devil, except he only had to say his name one time.

Why is it idiotic to look a cop in the eye? That should't be on the list of idiotic things.

Think about it this way, he did it while driving @ high speed. The frequency of horrific accidents due to distracted driving is enough as it is. If he proceeded with eye contact while turning his head away from the road ahead of him for too long a time.....

If it was for a long time, then I understand. If it was brief eye contact, then I don't think that's idiotic.

    This.

Are we talking about eye contact and then looking away or are we talking about staring someone down over a long period of time with the intent to intimidate?

Part of the problem is that people should not be trying to goad police officers and police officers should not view themselves as soldiers that need to puff their chest out and look at every possible slight as an opportunity to exert their authority.

As long as that's all that happens, sure. I mean, it'll suck if you are doing anything illegal or if you have warrants out on you, but I don't feel like it's any kind of civil rights violation.

No. The failure to signal more than 100 feet before the turn is the pretext. The eye contact (likely in combination with a out of state plate) is what raised the officer's suspicion/gave him a hunch. The hunch didn't play out when he made the pretext stop, so he sent the guy on his way. Annoying, but perfectly legal.
It doesn't end. We give cops fairly broad powers to investigate, limited by the Constitution, by case law, and by statute. You state legislature can pass laws outlawing pretext stops, but they are going to be hard to enforce because they require figuring out the subjective state of mind of the officer at each stop. Such laws would be a nightmare for prosecutors and would result in suppression motions in every case stemming from a car stop. In reality, the system works pretty well as is. The cops can make pretext stops, and most times that they don't find what they are looking for they will just send you on your way. Be polite to them and understand that they have a job to do and the vast majority of the time everything is going to work out just fine.
